Season 2 of the live-action One Piece series delivered some unexpected moments for fans, but Netflix still hasn’t cast a key character, despite a surprise appearance by them in the first episode. With One Piece: Into the Grand Line, the series has begun a new chapter for Monkey D. Luffy and the Straw Hat crew, introducing them to new characters and settings. Some of these debuts were particularly shocking to viewers.
Season 2 of the live-action series One Piece introduced some unexpected characters earlier than they appeared in the original manga, including Brook. The biggest surprise, however, was seeing Sabo appear in live-action. Despite this, producer Becky Clements told IGN that an actor hasn’t been officially cast to play Sabo yet.
Netflix’s One Piece Sabo Live-Action Actor Not Cast Yet

Matt Clements, a producer on the live-action One Piece series, discussed casting for future characters like Brook and Sabo. He explained they hope to be able to bring back the same actors in later seasons. However, when asked specifically about Sabo, Clements clarified that the actor seen is currently just a placeholder, similar to the brief appearance of Smoker at the end of the first season – a little surprise for viewers.
The movie One Piece: Into the Grand Line includes several hints and references to future events in the One Piece story, giving manga fans an extra layer of enjoyment while watching the live-action series. While it’s uncertain if the live-action show will ever fully explore the character of Sabo, his brief appearance highlights his importance even for viewers unfamiliar with him.
Who Is Sabo in One Piece?

Sabo doesn’t appear in the anime One Piece until much later than where the live-action series is now, but he’s a significant character connected to Luffy’s history. He becomes very important after the Dressrosa storyline and will likely be central to how the series ultimately concludes. Including even a brief appearance of him now, and linking him to the enigmatic Dragon, cleverly sets up future mysteries and storylines.
Production is underway for One Piece Season 3, but Netflix hasn’t announced a release date yet. This season will conclude the Alabasta storyline, and it’s unclear if the season will cover any arcs beyond that. There’s also a possibility that the character Sabo will have a more prominent role earlier than expected, along with other potential changes.
