Netflix is making a big push into anime, acquiring both popular and new series to compete with other streaming services. A standout addition is Sakamoto Days, a recent hit from Shonen Jump. Beyond streaming, the story of Taro Sakamoto is also getting a live-action movie adaptation, similar to the One Piece film, which will be released in Japan. To build excitement for the movie’s arrival next year, a new trailer for Sakamoto Days has been released.
The main reason to watch the new trailer is that fans finally get to see Taro, a character from the popular anime series, in his powerful, transformed state. The story follows a former assassin who’s trying to live a peaceful life with his family, but he can revert to his former, more formidable self when they’re threatened. Actor Ren Meguro underwent an incredible physical transformation to play both versions of Taro, spending four hours in makeup to create his larger form. The suit he wore for this transformation was incredibly heavy – over three hundred pounds – making it a physically demanding role. You can watch the trailer below.
The Days of Sakamoto

I recently finished watching the first season of Sakamoto Days on Netflix, and it was a great introduction to the world Taro Sakamoto created. However, as of now, neither Netflix nor TMS Entertainment, the studio behind the anime, have announced whether a second season is in the works. The good news is there’s still a lot of content from the original manga that could be adapted for future episodes. But, there’s also some news about the manga itself that isn’t so positive.
Manga artist Yuto Suzuki is finishing up the story of Sakamoto Days, bringing the series to a close. This happens as several other popular manga in Shonen Jump, including Jujutsu Kaisen, My Hero Academia, One Piece, and Black Clover, are also ending or nearing their conclusions. While there’s no official date yet, the final chapter could potentially be released around 2026, wrapping up the story for Taro and his family.
There’s currently no news about when the Sakamoto Days live-action movie will be released in North America, but most likely it will come here at some point. It’s still uncertain if it will be shown in cinemas, though.
