New Back To The Future Project Officially Releasing This Year With Michael J. Fox Returning

More than four decades after the first Back to the Future film hit cinemas, a new project starring Michael J. Fox is coming out.

Despite consistently opposing a fourth Back to the Future movie, Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale have enthusiastically supported Back to the Future: The Musical. The musical, based on their 1985 film, first premiered in London’s West End before moving to Broadway, with Zemeckis and Gale involved in the adaptation and Roger Bart starring as Doc Brown. Following its Broadway run, the show is now touring the United States.

A new full-length documentary about the Back to the Future musical, starring Michael J. Fox, will be available to stream on platforms like Prime Video, Apple TV, and YouTube starting March 24th. Called A Future on Stage, the film is directed by Brian Stillman and features interviews with Fox, director Robert Zemeckis, writer Bob Gale, and other cast and crew involved in the musical’s production. Bob Gale says he never imagined Back to the Future the Musical would be such a global success with sold-out shows. He thought making the original movie was a huge challenge, but bringing the musical to life proved even more difficult, and the documentary showcases the entire team’s journey.

The documentary will feature interviews with key players like Robert Zemeckis, Bob Gale, and Michael J. Fox, as well as cast members from the Broadway production, including Casey Likes, Liana Hunt, Jelani Remy, Nathaniel Hackmann, Mikaela Secada, and Merrit David Janes. Director John Rando, producer Colin Ingram, and production designer Tim Hatley will share behind-the-scenes details. The trailer highlights Michael J. Fox’s praise for Casey Likes, who played Marty McFly on Broadway, and reveals the challenging journey of bringing the musical to life – a journey that almost didn’t succeed.

The musical Back to the Future won the Olivier Award for Best New Musical while playing in London’s West End. When it moved to Broadway, it was nominated for Tony Awards, including one for its scenic design and another for the actor who played Doc Brown, Bart, for his performance.

Director Robert Zemeckis has expressed interest in adapting Back to the Future: The Musical into a film, similar to how Mel Brooks turned The Producers into a movie. He shared this idea with Universal Studios a couple of years ago, but they weren’t enthusiastic about it. This was before Universal’s recent success with the movie Wicked, and it’s unclear if their opinion has changed regarding a film version of the musical.

As a huge film fan, I’ve been loving seeing Michael J. Fox back on screen! Beyond discussing Back to the Future and the stage show A Future on Stage, he’s currently appearing in season 3 of Shrinking on Apple TV – new episodes are still dropping, and it’s great to see him playing Gerry, a character dealing with Parkinson’s, and building a friendship with Harrison Ford’s Paul, who also has the condition. And it’s not just him! Christopher Lloyd, the iconic Doc Brown, recently showed up as Professor Orloff in season 2 of Wednesday on Netflix, and he’s also back as David Mansell in Nobody 2 with Bob Odenkirk.
