It’s a fantastic time to be a Batman fan! The character is thriving in comics, consistently topping sales charts, and enjoying a surge in popularity across different platforms. The success of Matt Reeves’ *The Batman* is continuing with a sequel and a new HBO series, *The Penguin*. Plus, two animated Batman shows are available on Prime Video, and Warner Bros. and DC just announced two more Batman movies – one of which will be based on a beloved classic storyline.
At today’s New York Comic Con, Warner Bros. Animation revealed exciting news for DC fans: a new animated event based on the classic *Batman: Knightfall* storyline is in the works! The first of two planned movies is already in production and expected to be released next year. Jeff Wamester is directing, and Jeremy Adams is writing. This announcement is a dream come true for fans who have been waiting years to see this story adapted into animation.
Batman: Knightfall Remains One of DC’s Most Influential Stories
The animated film *Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall* is scheduled for release in 2026. It’s based on the popular year-long story arc from DC Comics, which featured a team of talented creators including Doug Moench, Chuck Dixon, Alan Grant, and many others. This storyline is famous for introducing two important characters to Batman’s world: Bane and Azrael.
Many fans are familiar with the *Knightfall* storyline, which started when Bane arrived in Gotham with the goal of surpassing Batman. He aimed to break Batman both physically and mentally, and part of his plan involved freeing all the villains from Arkham Asylum. This forced Batman to exhaust himself recapturing them, leaving him vulnerable. Bane then famously defeated Batman by breaking his back. The new animated movie seems likely to follow this same path, ending with that pivotal moment before continuing the story in a second part.
The *Knightfall* storyline doesn’t stop there. After Batman was injured, Gotham City needed a new hero, and Jean-Paul Valley stepped in as a replacement. He became Batman, wearing a suit that blended the classic Batman look with elements of his other persona, Azrael. This new Batman was much more aggressive, and many villains ended up dead. The story concludes with *KnightsEnd*, where Bruce Wayne must confront the consequences of choosing this replacement and deal with the extreme methods he employed – methods Bruce himself would never have allowed.
We don’t yet know how many movies the new *Knightfall* animated series will include, but a three-part adaptation would perfectly cover the entire story and give DC fans what they’ve been hoping for. So far, only parts of the *Knightfall* storyline have made it to the big screen – most notably, Christopher Nolan borrowed from Bane’s story in *The Dark Knight Rises*. However, even that was just one piece of the larger *Knightfall* saga, and popular characters like Azrael have never appeared in a live-action movie.
Warner Bros. Animation and DC are building on a popular trend with their latest animated movies: a growing, interconnected universe. They’ve successfully adapted many famous Batman storylines into animated films before, such as *Batman: Year One* and the two-part *Batman: The Dark Knight Returns*. Other well-known stories they’ve brought to life include *The Killing Joke*, *Under the Red Hood*, *Hush*, and *The Long Halloween*.
So, here’s what I’m taking away from this news: if Warner Bros. Animation is handling a *Knightfall* movie, it probably means we won’t see that story play out in the main DC Universe films. Matt Reeves’ *The Batman Part II* is already lined up with a fresh villain, which effectively takes Bane off the table, and *The Brave and the Bold* is confirmed as a Bat-family team-up with Damian Wayne. Of course, plans can always shift in Hollywood, but honestly, getting a *Knightfall* adaptation *at all*, even as an animated film, feels like a win – especially since a live-action version doesn’t seem likely right now.
