Disney’s Cinderella has been a classic since it first delighted audiences over 75 years ago. Over the years, we’ve seen many sequels and a live-action movie, plus Cinderella has appeared in other Disney projects. Now, Disney is creating something new set in her world, but it’s a surprising departure from what you might expect.
Disney is creating a live-action movie that reimagines the story of Cinderella, but this time, the focus isn’t on the princess. The film, called Stepsisters, will tell the story from the perspective of Cinderella’s stepsisters, Anastasia and Drizella. Akiva Schaffer, who directed Disney’s Chip n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers, is directing. The script was originally written by Michael Montemayor (Tangled) and is currently being revised by Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, known for their work on the upcoming The Naked Gun reboot.
What Should We Expect From Cinderella’s Evil Stepsisters Film?

Director Dan Schaffer, known for films like Chip n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers, excels at taking unusual ideas and making them funny and fresh. That film was clearly Disney, but also had a playful, slightly rebellious spirit. So, with Schaffer directing a story about Cinderella’s stepsisters, we can expect a similar lighthearted and witty take.
Anastasia and Drizella, encouraged by their mother Lady Tremaine, constantly try to make Cinderella feel bad. While they’re mostly played for laughs in the movie, they have some truly mean moments, like when they deliberately ruin Cinderella’s dress before the ball. The scene where they try on the glass slipper is also purely comedic, showing their funny and clumsy attempts to force their feet into it – a departure from the traditional fairytale.
It appears this new project is set after the first movie, though that hasn’t been officially confirmed. If it is, the story could be completely new, or it might incorporate elements from the direct-to-video sequels. For example, Cinderella II: Dreams Come True includes a storyline where Anastasia falls for a baker, despite her mother and sister’s disapproval. Cinderella surprisingly helps Anastasia prepare for a ball and a date with him.
In Cinderella III: A Twist In Time, Anastasia learns the Fairy Godmother’s secrets from the first movie. She manages to steal the wand and mistakenly turns the Fairy Godmother into a statue. Lady Tremaine then uses the wand to travel back in time, hoping to alter events so Anastasia, instead of Cinderella, marries the prince. They succeed in changing history, starting with magically making Anastasia’s foot fit the glass slipper, and their adventure unfolds from there.
These are just preliminary thoughts, and nothing is official yet, but it demonstrates the potential for these characters and the broader idea. We hope to learn more specifics in the near future.
