New EA Partnership Will ‘Reimagine How Games Are Made’ with AI

The AI boom has already arrived, and it’s about to infiltrate the video game industry at large.

Stability AI, a major independent generative AI company, is partnering with Electronic Arts (EA) to create new AI models and tools. These advancements will help EA’s creative teams – artists, designers, and developers – revolutionize the game development process.

The press release explains:

EA and Stability AI are joining forces, bringing together EA’s experience in gaming and Stability AI’s advanced AI technology. This collaboration will revolutionize how EA creates and delivers games and experiences to players globally, unlocking new levels of creativity.

Although the details of the partnership are still unclear, the companies announced they’re investigating how generative AI can improve the creative process. This could help artists and developers quickly create and improve game ideas, visuals, and overall gameplay, allowing for faster and more extensive development.

It continues:

One of the first things this collaboration will focus on is speeding up the creation of realistic 3D materials. They’ll do this by developing new, artist-friendly tools – for instance, creating 2D textures that maintain accurate color and lighting in any game environment. The partnership will also explore using AI to quickly generate complete 3D environments based on simple instructions, giving artists unprecedented control and speed in creating game content.

Currently, developers still largely control the creative process, but it’s hard to predict how much AI will be used in the future.

A new survey found that more than 87% of game developers are now using artificial intelligence to help with their work, either by making things run smoother or by handling repetitive jobs.

AI can definitely be a useful tool for speeding up tasks, but as it starts to impact art and creative fields, some people worry that the personal, human element might disappear.
