New Emmerdale fan-favourite tipped for exit later this year – but will they return?

Even though Chris Coghill has been popular with viewers since joining Emmerdale, reports suggest he may have already finished filming his scenes as Kev Townsend, hinting at an upcoming departure.

The ITV soap opera revealed over the summer that the actor previously known from EastEnders would be joining the cast as a character shrouded in mystery.

After being introduced in September, the character played by Coghill was revealed to be Kev Townsend, the recently released from prison and secretly married husband of popular character Robert Sugden (played by Ryan Hawley).

This created a new problem for Robert and his ex-husband, Aaron Dingle. They had just overcome a dangerous situation involving Robert’s murderous half-brother and Aaron’s husband, who had recently left the country.

The story took another turn when Kev shared that he was terminally ill. Despite being in love with Aaron, Robert stayed with Kev and supported him until he passed away.

Recently, an episode showed how Robert and Kev’s relationship developed in the past. Meanwhile, in the present, Robert broke up with Kev after discovering Kev wasn’t actually seriously ill or as rich as he’d claimed, and has gone back to a criminal lifestyle.

The story took another surprising turn on Friday, November 21st, 2025, with the revelation that Kev is also Lewis Barton’s (Bradley Riches) biological father. However, Lewis is currently unaware of this connection.

According to a report in The Sun, actor Tom Coghill has finished filming his initial appearances as the character Kev. However, positive reactions to both the character and Coghill’s acting suggest he might reprise the role in the future.

According to a source, viewers really connect with Kev. While producers expected Chris to be well-received due to his acting talent, Kev’s popularity has been a pleasant surprise.

Chris filmed all his scheduled scenes through the end of the year, and that was originally supposed to be the end of his involvement. However, producers are now exploring options to bring him back in future episodes to satisfy viewers.

What event could lead Kev to leave the village, and how will this affect the lives of Robert, Aaron, and his son, Lewis?

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7:30pm on ITV1. Stream on ITVX.
