In 1987, Square Enix revolutionized role-playing games with the first Final Fantasy on the original Nintendo Entertainment System. The series has grown immensely since then, with 16 core games and numerous spin-offs. Now, Square Enix has announced a brand new Final Fantasy game, and it’s coming out later this year – a surprising announcement for fans.
Square Enix and KessCo just announced a new Final Fantasy board game based on the pixel art from Final Fantasy I-VI. Called Final Fantasy: The Board Game, it’s the first in a planned series, and this initial version will let players experience the worlds of Final Fantasy I through III in a simplified, easy-to-learn board game format. Fans can look forward to playing it later this year, with a planned release in the third quarter of 2026.

This Is The Beginning Of A Major Final Fantasy Lineup

The new collaboration between Square Enix and KessCo is likely to extend beyond this first game, and we may learn more at Toy Fair. If KessCo continues to release games similar to the Pixel Remasters, it’s reasonable to expect that after remaking Final Fantasy I, II, and III, they’ll move on to adapt Final Fantasy IV, V, and the popular Final Fantasy VI.
It’s unclear whether this new approach will extend beyond the Pixel Remaster games and include future titles, potentially even the popular Final Fantasy VII. Square Enix could continue releasing games in this style, which might lead to remakes of Final Fantasy VII, VIII, and IX. This is also notable because Square Enix used to publish its own tabletop games directly, so it’s uncertain if they’ll continue doing so or if KessCo will handle all future tabletop releases.
The collaboration will include new accessories, like collectible RPG dice based on Final Fantasy. These dice, designed with the Pixel Remaster style, are intended for both gameplay and display, and each set will feature a sculpted character figurine on top of the dice container. We expect to see these accessories showcased at Toy Fair later this year.
As a gamer, I’ve been loving seeing how popular FINAL FANTASY has become on the tabletop scene – it’s awesome seeing both old fans and new players getting into it together. I’m really excited that KessCo is teaming up with Square Enix to keep that going! They’re promising a tabletop version that stays true to the classic Pixel Remaster games we all know and love, but also makes it easy to pick up and play, and even collect. Sounds perfect!
