The newest *Final Fantasy* game is a success with longtime fans of the role-playing series. *Final Fantasy* has been popular for 38 years and remains as beloved as ever. While new games like *Final Fantasy 16* help, much of its continued success comes from Square Enix re-releasing classic titles through remasters and remakes. This latest release is a remaster, and it’s receiving very positive reviews.
Square Enix recently released a remastered and expanded version of the classic tactical RPG, *Final Fantasy Tactics*, called *Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles*. While it’s not surprising that a great game remains so, updating a 28-year-old title for modern audiences is challenging – many similar attempts haven’t been successful. Fortunately, *Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles* has been well-received.
Universal Praise
Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles has received very positive reviews. Metacritic gives it an 88 out of 100, placing it among the best games of 2025. Players seem to love it even more, with a 91% approval rating on Steam based on over 2,250 reviews. It also boasts near-perfect user scores on both the PlayStation Store and the Xbox Store.
Many players have pointed out that this remastered version stays true to the original game while also making smart improvements. These include features like automatic saving, the ability to skip cutscenes, and better voice acting – all without changing the core experience, just making it even better.
The top review on Steam calls this the best way to enjoy the classic game. Even players new to *Final Fantasy Tactics* are finding it highly replayable, with one user saying it’s become a favorite.
Given that Square Enix essentially had to remake the original PlayStation game for this updated version, the quality of the final product is really noteworthy. However, looking at their work on *Final Fantasy 7* and other titles, it’s not entirely unexpected. While Square Enix has released some disappointing ports and remasters in the past, they’ve generally done a great job with their core *Final Fantasy* series, particularly in recent years.
