Today, game companies often update older games with remasters and remakes, allowing new players to enjoy classics. This also helps them gauge which games and characters remain popular with fans, potentially leading to more sequels or revivals. For longtime gamers, it’s a great opportunity to revisit beloved titles and experience them in a new light, especially with rereleases becoming increasingly common.
Many game reboots and remakes never actually get finished – for every one that succeeds, there are likely many more that are cancelled during development. It appears this fate has befallen a potential new installment in a well-known vampire game series, being considered by Eidos-Montreal. Although the game wasn’t officially announced, evidence suggests it would have been a revival of a popular vampire franchise that hasn’t seen a new single-player title in over two decades.
A Potential Sequel To Legacy Of Kain Has Been Quietly Shut Down

Recent layoffs and project cancellations at Eidos-Montreal seem to have stopped efforts to bring back the Legacy of Kain series. According to Twisted Voxel, one of the projects cancelled was a dark fantasy action RPG with melee combat and parkour elements, and it was intended to revive a well-known vampire franchise.
Based on the types of games Eidos-Montreal was working on, many believed a new Legacy of Kain game was in development. Although a sequel or remake hadn’t been officially announced, the recent success of Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered likely encouraged the publisher to consider continuing the series. Unfortunately, with other projects like a competitive eSport game, a stealth action game, and a turn-based RPG also in the works, it seems a new Legacy of Kain title isn’t currently planned.
Legacy Of Kain Was Due For A Comeback

The Legacy of Kain series was popular on the PlayStation 1 and 2, with five games released between 1996 and 2003. Developed by Silicon Knights, the games tell the story of vampires Kain and Raziel, and how their destinies are connected to the dark world of Nosgoth. The action-adventure games were similar to Ocarina of Time, combining fighting with puzzle-solving as players explored a large and detailed world.
What really set the game apart was its strong emphasis on storytelling, drawing inspiration from classic fantasy and gothic novels like The Wheel of Time and the Neroscope series. The game featured a grand, overarching story that combined dark vampire lore with themes of destiny and hope, and characters – like Kain – who fought against seemingly unavoidable fates. This kind of ambitious and complex storytelling was relatively rare in games at the time, and the depth of the characters still holds up impressively today.
The Legacy of Kain series feels ready for a new installment, either a remake or a sequel that continues the story after Legacy of Kain: Defiance from 2003. The positive reception to last year’s remastered versions of the original games made a follow-up seem likely, but it looks like financial concerns are currently holding things up. Fans are hoping we’ll eventually get another Legacy of Kain game to enjoy.
