Before February’s PlayStation State of Play event, fans were excited to see what announcements would be made, but details were scarce. It turned out PlayStation is focusing on revisiting older favorites this year, bringing several classic games to the PS5, along with new entries in well-loved series. One of these new games revealed during the event was the latest installment in the Brigandine series.
The Brigandine series began in 1998 with the first game on the original PlayStation. Brigandine: The Legend of Forsensa combined turn-based tactical RPG elements with strategy gameplay. After a 20-year hiatus, a direct sequel, Brigandine: The Legend of Runersia, was released in 2020. Now, the series is back with a third installment, Brigandine Abyss, coming to PS5 later this year.
Brigandine Abyss Delivers a New Entry in Beloved Strategy Series

The initial trailer for Brigandine Abyss was shown during the February 12th State of Play presentation. It offered a first glimpse at the newest game in the series, a standalone fantasy strategy RPG. Players will once again use strategic thinking to protect their land from a powerful threat, similar to previous installments. The game includes many beloved features from the original two Brigandine titles, which will please long-time fans who remember the PlayStation 1 games. However, Brigandine Abyss will also feature completely new gameplay mechanics that Sony hasn’t shared details about yet.
Brigandine Abyss brings back strategic hex-grid battles and classic RPG gameplay. Players can command over 100 different unit types, each with unique abilities and characteristics. Similar to the previous game, it combines beautiful 2D character art with detailed 3D battlefields for an immersive experience. If you’re interested in seeing this new Brigandine game – the first in six years – check out the trailer below.
Okay, so I just got a first look at this new fantasy RPG strategy game, and it looks awesome! There are six main characters, and each one leads a different faction with its own story. That alone gives it huge replay value – I’m already planning multiple playthroughs. Plus, there are going to be side quests that let you really explore all the different groups in the game’s world. The PlayStation blog says you can easily sink over 200 hours into this thing – seriously, 200+ hours! I’m hooked already.
The new game will definitely thrill long-time fans, but it also tells a fresh story with a brand new cast. This makes it perfect for newcomers who haven’t played the previous games. While it includes nods to the first two titles, Brigandine Abyss is being developed by a completely new team.
We don’t have a specific release date for Brigandine Abyss yet, but it’s planned to come out on the PlayStation 5 in 2026. The first game in the series was only on PlayStation, but the sequel, Legend of Runersia, was released on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PC. This suggests that Brigandine Abyss might also be available on multiple platforms.
