New Game of Thrones Spinoff That’s a Franchise First Gets Official Update From Star

The world of Game of Thrones is getting bigger, and one upcoming TV show will be a new first for the series. Since the original Game of Thrones ended, HBO has been slowly building out its stories set in Westeros, but they’ve been more cautious about it than many other franchises. So far, only two prequel shows have actually aired: House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Another pilot, Bloodmoon (focused on the Long Night), was filmed but never developed into a full series. Similarly, a sequel starring Kit Harington as Jon Snow never moved past the planning stages.

With the upcoming release of House of the Dragon Season 3, discussions are naturally turning to the show’s future. While the plan is currently for HOTD to conclude after four seasons, anticipated to air in 2028, at least one character may reappear in a separate series. A show focusing on Corlys Velaryon, called The Sea Snake, has been in the works for several years. It originally was planned as a live-action show, but is now being developed as an animated series – a first for this universe. Actor Steve Toussaint recently shared some insights about the project with ScreenRant.

When the idea for the animated series first came up during the first season, I was really excited about it. But then I realized I’d already played that character for a long time and worried about doing it again. George R.R. Martin reassured me it would be animated, which sounded good. After that, I didn’t hear anything more about it. I recently spoke with George and, as far as I know, the project is still in development, though I don’t know how far along it is. That’s all I know at this point.

House Of The Dragon’s Corlys Velaryon Spinoff Timeline & Story Explained

Toussaint’s recent comments indicate the project isn’t progressing rapidly, but that’s understandable considering HBO is currently prioritizing other shows. It’s also likely HBO wouldn’t release a spin-off focusing on Corlys Velaryon before House of the Dragon concludes, due to the shared characters. However, this news isn’t a hint about the character’s fate in the upcoming Dance of the Dragons storyline, as the spin-off would be set years earlier as a prequel.

The show will focus on the incredible voyages of Corlys Velaryon, known as the Sea Snake. Over nine journeys, he traveled further and explored more of the world than anyone else in Westeros. His adventures took him to distant lands in Essos, including the exotic cities of Asshai-by-the-Shadow, Qarth, and Yi Ti. These voyages are what made him famous and allowed him to amass the immense fortune that gives him so much power in House of the Dragon. He completed all nine voyages by 90 AC, about 40 years before the start of Season 3.

Toussaint is particularly fascinated by the romance between Corlys and Rhaenys Targaryen. He admitted he’s a romantic at heart and is more interested in learning how Corlys won Rhaenys’s affection. He also enjoys the stories of Corlys’s adventures, believing they were driven both by his adventurous spirit and a desire to impress her.

What Other Game Of Thrones Spinoffs Are In The Works?

HBO is moving forward with its plans for the world of Game of Thrones. A second season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is officially happening, and they’re hoping to create several more seasons focusing on the characters Dunk and Egg. Additionally, a live-action series called 10,000 Ships has been in the works for a while. This show would tell the story of Princess Nymeria and her people, the Rhoynar, as they journey to Dorne over a thousand years before the events of Thrones.

Besides the previously announced Dunk & Egg series, HBO is working on several other Game of Thrones spinoffs. One, currently called The Golden Empire, will be set in the land of Yi Ti, but details about the plot are scarce. Other projects remain shrouded in mystery, and George R.R. Martin has confirmed that sequels to Game of Thrones are also being planned. A potential sequel could follow the adventures of Arya Stark, and there’s still a chance the idea for a Jon Snow-focused series could be revisited.

The biggest news is a Game of Thrones movie! Warner Bros. has confirmed that Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest is in development for theaters. Beau Willimon, known for House of Cards and Andor, is writing the script. The film will tell the story of the Targaryen invasion of Westeros, happening 300 years before the events of the TV series, and promises plenty of action and three dragons. While there’s no release date yet, considering they haven’t started casting or production, 2028 seems like the earliest possible timeframe.

As a huge fan, I’m so excited to share that you can still watch Game of Thrones on HBO Max! And even better, the premiere date for House of the Dragon Season 3 is set for June 21st – mark your calendars!
