A recent leak suggests that Rocket League is about to undergo its biggest transformation since its launch in 2015, when it quickly became popular on PlayStation Plus. Even after 11 years, the game hasn’t changed drastically, and that’s generally been seen as a good thing – why fix what isn’t broken? However, when Epic Games bought Psyonix in 2019, many wondered what that would mean for Rocket League. While the impact hasn’t been huge until now, that looks like it’s about to change.
A well-known Fortnite data miner, BeastFNCreative, has discovered that Epic Games is rebuilding every Rocket League arena inside Fortnite’s Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN). While it’s not entirely clear why, this strongly suggests that the two games may be combined. If so, Rocket League would likely become a part of Fortnite, rather than being a separate game.
Rocket League Fans Are Not Happy
Fans are overwhelmingly negative about the recent leak, with one commenting, “Literally no one asked for this.” Others fear it will “ruin the game” and even predict that a potential merge would “officially kill” Rocket League.
Most Rocket League players don’t want this to happen, but some point out it would mean the game could be upgraded to Unreal Engine 5, something many fans have requested.
This could also affect fans of Rocket Racing. If Rocket League continues to be successful, it would likely become the main focus, potentially replacing Rocket Racing altogether, which hasn’t been as popular. Honestly, Rocket Racing hasn’t really taken off.
Keep in mind that all of this is currently unconfirmed and based on speculation. Psyonix and Epic Games haven’t officially commented on any of this, and we don’t anticipate they will.
