Details are emerging about HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter TV series, including a first look at a key location from the Wizarding World. The show, which has been in development for months, is slated to premiere on HBO and HBO Max in 2027. We’ve gotten glimpses of the main characters – including Dominic McLaughlin as Harry – and have even seen some interesting updates to the story, like a scene featuring Albus Dumbledore and Nicolas Flamel.
A recently deleted video, originally shared by the UK tabloid The Sun (and spotted by Wizarding World Direct), gave viewers a peek at Diagon Alley, the famous shopping street for wizards in the Harry Potter universe. This location is hugely significant in the series, marking Harry’s first real introduction to the magical world after discovering who he truly is. The street’s design in the upcoming remake closely resembles the look from the Harry Potter films, featuring vibrant buildings that add a magical touch to a classic 19th-century English setting.
Is The Harry Potter TV Show Sticking Too Close To The Movies’ Design?

The video sparked a familiar discussion about the remake: if it looks so much like the original movies, what’s the reason for making it? This issue has come up before, like with the depiction of Nick Frost as Hagrid and the recreation of Diagon Alley. The movies weren’t perfect, but they brought the magical world to life incredibly well, and it’s difficult to improve upon that.
As a big fan of the films, I’ve been checking out photos of the new Diagon Alley set, and while it’s amazing, there are definitely some changes. The street itself feels a lot tighter than how it looks on screen, and they’ve added a few businesses that weren’t there before – like this fun coffee shop called Accioffee with a bright neon sign, which feels a bit modern for the wizarding world! Gringotts is still at the end of the street and looks as grand as ever, but it opens up into more of a public square now. I also noticed a lot more activity happening on the upper floors of the shops, including a cool stone bridge that stretches across the street. Of course, knowing how these things work, they’ll probably use a lot of visual effects to polish it up and maybe even change things further to match the films.
This new version needs to strike a delicate balance. The previous films did a lot well, so drawing inspiration from them – particularly in areas like visual style, which also aligns with the books – is smart. However, it also needs to stay truer to the original story while adding its own unique touches and exploring ideas that were either left out of the books or the previous films.
It’s hard to please everyone, as we’ve already seen with reactions to the Diagon Alley video. While the project could afford to deviate from the movies a bit more, it’s also making some good changes and additions – like including characters such as Peeves and Professor Binns, or showing more of Draco Malfoy’s home life. These choices help it be different from the films.
Because the Harry Potter TV series will be longer than the movies, it has the opportunity to develop the stories and characters in much greater detail. If done well, this could help the show stand on its own and feel distinct from the films.
