A new trailer for the upcoming Star Wars movie, The Mandalorian & Grogu, has revealed a glimpse of a seldom-seen creature from the Star Wars universe. The film, which continues the story from the hit Disney+ series, arrives in theaters on May 22nd. Pedro Pascal reprises his role as Din Djarin, the Mandalorian, and is joined by Grogu, the young creature of the same species as Yoda. Joining the cast are Sigourney Weaver, playing Ward, a leader within the New Republic’s Adelphi Rangers, and Jeremy Allen White as Rotta the Hutt, the son of the infamous Jabba the Hutt.
The latest footage from Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu features an Anooba, a rarely seen creature from Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Some fans think it’s the same Anooba, Marrok, but that character is already known to be deceased. This is probably a different Anooba, belonging to the same species.

Who Is the Anooba in Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu?

A brief glimpse in the trailer revealed what appears to be an Anooba creature. Some fans believe it’s Marrok, an Anooba who first appeared 14 years ago in a Star Wars: The Clone Wars episode called “Bounty.” However, this is probably incorrect. Marrok was a male Anooba and a loyal friend to the bounty hunter Embo during the Clone Wars, often helping him on missions and in fights. Interestingly, Marrok was unique because unlike most Anooba, he didn’t have the large tusks that usually protrude from their lower jaw.
As a huge Star Wars fan, I wasn’t at all surprised to see an Anooba in The Mandalorian & Grogu. Knowing that Dave Filoni, one of the show’s writers, actually created Marrok for The Clone Wars makes it pretty clear why he’d bring the species back. And honestly, it doesn’t feel strange that it might not be the same Anooba as Marrok – they’ve been established in the universe for a while, even as domesticated creatures. Seeing one alongside Embo in the footage just feels natural, especially since Filoni himself voices Embo! It all fits together really nicely.
It’s also possible Marrok will reappear in the new movie, even though he died in the book Aftermath: Empire’s End. Recent Star Wars projects have shown they’re willing to disregard or alter events that only happened in books or comics. The Mandalorian and Grogu is scheduled for release on May 22, 2026.
