New Nintendo Game Available for Free

Nintendo has released a new game for free on mobile devices – you don’t need a Nintendo Switch, Switch Online subscription, or even a Nintendo console to play! Following a recent giveaway on the Nintendo eShop, this new free game is available through the App Store and Google Play. It comes from the creators of popular franchises like Mario and The Legend of Zelda.

Okay, so Nintendo surprised everyone today! Instead of digging up old games, they dropped a brand new one called Pictonico. It’s pretty cool – it uses the photos on your phone to create a bunch of different minigames. It’s what they call ‘free-to-start,’ which basically means you get a bunch of minigames for free when you download it, but there are up to 80 total, and you’ll have to pay to unlock the rest. So there’s a free version and a premium version. The good news is, Nintendo says they don’t collect any of the photos you use, so your pictures stay on your phone – they aren’t sending them anywhere.

WarioWare Spirtual Successor?

Nintendo recently announced and released a free game very quickly – just ten days after the initial announcement. This fast release might suggest they weren’t expecting a huge hit, or perhaps they’re confident their loyal fans will enjoy it regardless. The announcement trailer has a decent like-to-dislike ratio (7,200 likes to 543 dislikes), though it’s not as overwhelmingly positive as some Nintendo releases. Since the game just came out today, user reviews are still coming in, so it’s too early to get a sense of what players think.

The most popular comment on the trailer said it felt like a game that would have come built-in with the 3DS, alongside a game like Face Copters. Another commenter simply wrote, “Basically WarioWare Snapped, welcome back!”

A third top comment further adds: “The most normal, strangest thing to come out of Nintendo.”

Fans have pointed out that this game feels like a follow-up to WarioWare: Snapped, which used the Nintendo DSi’s camera for quick, fun mini-games. It also strongly resembles the classic WarioWare series, something many Nintendo fans have hoped to see on mobile. For those fans, this might be the closest they ever get to that experience.
