New Nintendo Switch 2 Model With Upgrade Officially Confirmed

Nintendo has officially announced a new and improved Nintendo Switch 2, following a previous leak. While the original Switch saw updates with the Switch Lite and OLED models, this new version isn’t a simple revision – it’s a significant upgrade. However, it will initially only be available in Europe, with other regions like the US and Japan missing out for the time being.

Back in January, a listing on Nintendo’s website hinted at a different version of the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. A new product code, “OSM,” appeared alongside the standard Switch 2’s code (“BEE”), leading some fans to believe a “Lite” or “OLED” model was on the way. However, it seems Nintendo was actually developing this version to meet European regulations. These regulations require the Switch 2 to have a removable and replaceable battery, a feature not included in the initial launch model. It’s currently unknown when this change will take effect, or why it’s more cost-effective for Nintendo to create a separate version just for Europe. It’s possible Nintendo may eventually roll out this version globally.

What Does This Mean for the Switch 1?

The announcement of a new Switch model doesn’t address what’s happening with the original Switch in Europe. It’s likely Nintendo will stop making and selling the older version there, but they’d probably announce that first. It’s also possible they’ll continue to support it for existing customers. To be honest, the original Switch isn’t selling well in most European countries anyway, so this might not be a big issue for many people.

A lot of this remains unclear because Nintendo hasn’t officially said anything about it. Instead, we’ve learned about it through reports from regulators in Europe.

We’ll update this article if Nintendo releases more information, but it seems unlikely since they haven’t officially announced anything yet.
