New PlayStation Game Officially Third Best Xbox Series X Game in 2026

Currently, one of the top three highest-rated games on Xbox Series X this year is actually a game originally made for PlayStation. It’s surprising because, while the game received a good score of 84 on Metacritic, it shouldn’t be among the very best games available on Xbox Series X in 2024. This points to a bigger issue: many of the most popular games released so far aren’t available on Xbox Series X. Some are only on PC, others are exclusive to Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5, and even some multi-platform games don’t include Xbox Series X.

In 2026, the top-rated game for Xbox Series X is Resident Evil Requiem by Capcom, followed by Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection, also from Capcom. Marathon, a PlayStation title, comes in third. It’s important to note these rankings are based specifically on review scores for the Xbox Series X versions. Many of these games are available on multiple platforms and might receive better scores elsewhere. When considering all platforms, Marathon actually ranks eighth overall, as the PlayStation 5 version has the most reviews and a score of 81 on Metacritic. However, regardless of how the scores are sorted, Marathon consistently appears among the highest-rated Xbox Series X games, and PlayStation titles generally outperform games developed by Xbox Game Studios.

A Familiar Face for Xbox Fans

As an Xbox fan, I think what makes Marathon so interesting isn’t just that it’s a PlayStation game – it’s the fact that it was made by Bungie. For anyone who doesn’t know, Bungie used to be part of Xbox and they’re the original creators of Halo. They led the Halo series for years, right up until they left Xbox and passed the reins over to 343 Industries with Halo 4.

Players with Xbox Series X or S who want to try the new game Marathon from Bungie will need to purchase it for $40. Currently, the game has a 4 out of 5 star rating on the Xbox Store, based on over 1,100 user reviews.

While Marathon likely won’t be among the top-rated Xbox Series X games by year’s end, it’s currently performing well, and this points to a bigger issue for Xbox: many of the best games each year also appear on other platforms, and that’s often how they gain popularity.
