Spring 2027 promises to be a fantastic month for fans, with two popular franchises hitting theaters one after the other. What’s especially interesting is that one is a comedic take on the other, and this will be the first time both are available in cinemas at the same time, though with a four-week gap between their releases. If you’re excited to revisit a familiar sci-fi universe and its characters, mark your calendars for spring 2027!
Next spring will see the release of both Star Wars: Starfighter and a sequel to the classic comedy Spaceballs, which first came out in 1987. Starfighter is scheduled for May, while the Spaceballs sequel will arrive in April. Good news for fans of the original Spaceballs: Mel Brooks and most of the original cast – including Rick Moranis, Bill Pullman, George Wynder, and Daphne Zuniga – are all returning. Joining them are new cast members Josh Gad, Keke Palmer, Lewis Pullman, and Anthony Carrigan.
It’s Gonna Be a Great Time for Legacy Sci-Fi Franchise
Although the exact storyline of Starfighter remains largely unknown, fans have been busy developing theories. Some popular ideas include Ryan Gosling’s character surviving the attack on Luke’s temple, Matt Smith playing a villain who is also the father of Flynn Gray’s character, and Amy Adams possessing Force abilities. These theories all seem plausible to fans. Officially, the only information released is a brief synopsis: “In a galaxy recovering from conflict, a lone pilot finds themselves caught up in a vital mission as new dangers appear. Their actions could change the fate of the Force.”
Okay, so everyone’s been wondering about Spaceballs II, and honestly, details are still pretty scarce. From what I’ve gathered, it seems like the sequel is really going after the Star Wars sequel trilogy for its satire. The interesting casting news is that Bill Pullman is set to play the father of Lewis Pullman’s character – talk about a fun dynamic! Beyond that, and the announcement of a release date, we don’t know much. The original Spaceballs is a total cult classic, you know? It’s about this rogue star pilot, Lone Starr, and his hilarious sidekick, Barf – who’s half-man, half-dog, naturally. They have to rescue Princess Vespa and save the planet Druidia from the villainous Spaceballs, led by the wonderfully over-the-top Dark Helmet. It’s as silly as it sounds, and that’s exactly why it’s so great. And, as Mel Brooks famously said while playing Yogurt, let’s hope Spaceballs 2: The Search For More Money actually happens!
