PlayStation fans are in for a treat with a new exclusive game coming to both PS5 and PS4, taking them back to the feel of 1990s Sega classics. While Nioh 3, currently the year’s biggest and best-rated release on PS5, doesn’t offer much in the way of retro appeal, those craving a nostalgic experience should mark February 20th on their calendars.
Starting February 20th, players on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and PC will have access to a remastered version of a classic Sega game called Prize Fighter: Heavyweight Edition. This game was originally released in 1993 for the Sega CD, and it’s something Xbox and Nintendo fans won’t be able to play. The Sega CD was known for its use of full-motion video games, a trend that was briefly popular. While Night Trap is the most famous example, Prize Fighter, created by Digital Pictures and published by Sega, was another well-regarded title in that style.
Remaster of the 1993 Sega CD Game
On February 20th, Screaming Villains is releasing an updated version of their classic full-motion boxing game. While it’s essentially a complete overhaul – often called a remake – the company is calling it a remaster. Either way, players can expect a significant upgrade, including 4K video and lots of new content and improvements.
If you enjoyed full-motion video (FMV) games in the 90s, but aren’t a fan of boxing, you’ll be glad to hear that Slam City with Scottie Pippen is getting a remastered re-release this year, though we don’t have a specific date yet. And if you’re feeling nostalgic for Sega games from 1993, another classic from that year has also been recently re-released.
We’re seeing a big increase in revisiting older games from the 1990s, 2000s, and even the 2010s. One reason for this is that it’s a relatively safe bet for developers compared to creating entirely new games. Because of this, we can expect even more games from those eras to return as updated versions – ports, remasters, and remakes. As this happens, these releases are likely to become more specialized and target smaller audiences, which is already starting to be the case. Interestingly, these smaller, more niche games are often simpler and less expensive to bring back.
