New PS5 Controller Doesn’t Come With the Feature PlayStation Fans Wanted

PlayStation fans hoping for a major upgrade to the PS5 DualSense controller will be disappointed with the latest version. Recent reports suggested Sony was planning a new model with a removable battery, allowing users to easily replace it as it aged. However, the newly released DualSense doesn’t include this feature, falling short of expectations.

Tech YouTuber Austin Evans recently shared a detailed look inside the new PlayStation 5 Pro, as well as a teardown of the DualSense controller. He confirmed reports that Sony has updated the DualSense’s battery, but it’s not easily replaceable. While the battery has been tweaked, earlier rumors suggesting it could be swapped out proved to be incorrect. Overall, the new DualSense controller is very similar to the original version.

Will This DualSense Overhaul Ever Happen?

While the PlayStation 5’s DualSense controller currently doesn’t allow users to swap out the battery, Sony may consider adding this feature in the future. Sony has been updating the DualSense over time, releasing it in new colors and with improved versions like the DualSense Edge. Offering a replaceable battery would be a smart move to help customers protect their investment in these more expensive controller options.

Currently, it doesn’t seem like this feature will be added to the DualSense controller anytime soon. Considering the PS5 is already past its midpoint in terms of lifespan, we might not see this controller improvement until the PS6 is released.
