Throughout PlayStation’s history, it’s very common to see different hardware revisions. While these updates vary in significance, they usually result in consoles that are less expensive to manufacture, and therefore, more affordable for customers to purchase.
Despite worldwide circumstances beyond Sony’s influence, the newest standard PS5 model (often called the “slim” version) is an example of a product where those cost savings aren’t being passed on to consumers.
YouTuber Austin Evans recently acquired a new model – currently sold only in Europe – and disassembled it to determine what improvements have been made:
Basically, the updated PS5 is a more lightweight console built with less expensive materials. However, it still delivers the same level of performance and power as the original model.

There have been a few internal updates, including a lighter metal cover – its weight has been cut in half. The machine’s exterior is now covered in matte plastics throughout.
According to Evans, the device is well-designed and effective in nearly every way; however, the limited amount of built-in SSD storage is a noticeable weakness.
When the original PlayStation 5 came out, it had an 825 GB SSD. Then, with the first Slim version, they upped the storage to 1 TB. But honestly, the newest model is a bit of a step back – it’s gone back down to the smaller 825 GB. It’s a little frustrating as a gamer who downloads a lot of games, you know? I was hoping for even more storage!
This change was likely made to reduce production expenses, but it means you get more than 25% less usable storage compared to the earlier PS5 model, and that’s not great.
What’s really frustrating is that this PS5 still costs the same, so you’re paying the same price for a console that’s a little less powerful – and that just doesn’t feel right.
It’s still uncertain whether this model will be released worldwide, or if the PS5’s price will change again. But it seems like the trend of consoles getting cheaper over time is now over.
