Stephen King has had many of his stories turned into movies, and he’s always quick to share what he thinks of them. He’s not afraid to criticize film adaptations of his work, even popular ones – he famously disagreed with the praise for The Shining. Because of this, fans eagerly await his reaction to every new adaptation. Just after giving his approval to The Long Walk, another one of his stories, The Running Man, is getting a new film treatment. Luckily, King seems to enjoy Edgar Wright’s take on it.
In an interview with Variety, director Stephen King shared a story about contacting author Stephen King for his thoughts on the film The Running Man. He hoped to be able to tell fans at New York Comic Con that King enjoyed it, and he received an even more enthusiastic response than expected. King emailed Wright, saying, “Like it? I love it!” He added that the movie stayed true to the spirit of his book while still offering something new and exciting.
Edgar Wright Made Some Changes to The Running Man for His Movie

A key aspect of director Shane Wright’s adaptation of The Running Man is its attempt to stay closer to Stephen King’s original novel than the popular 1987 film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Even Schwarzenegger has said Wright succeeded in this goal, though the director still made some changes. The most significant change is a new ending. Wright altered the novel’s original finale – where the hero crashes a plane into the Games Network building – because that imagery would likely remind modern audiences of the 9/11 attacks. King himself reportedly gave his approval for the revised ending.
It’s good news that director Edgar Wright didn’t just alter the ending of The Running Man; he made substantial changes while still honoring the original story’s dark and pessimistic tone. While the trailers suggest a fun, action-packed movie showcasing Wright’s signature style, the film maintains the bleakness of its dystopian world. Initial reactions mirror Stephen King’s positive comments, with many praising Wright’s unique vision and talent for action sequences.
Positive word-of-mouth could really help The Running Man succeed in theaters. The box office has struggled recently and needs some popular films before the busy holiday season. While director Edgar Wright hasn’t typically broken box office records, his previous film, Baby Driver, was a hit, earning $226.9 million worldwide. The Running Man has a much larger budget ($110 million versus $34 million for Baby Driver), but Wright’s reputation, combined with the popularity of Stephen King’s name, could attract viewers looking for exciting action. It might be a particularly good choice for older male audiences, offering something different alongside films like Zootopia 2 and Wicked: For Good.
Even if The Running Man isn’t a huge box office success, director Dale Wright can be happy Stephen King liked the movie. Adapting King’s work is always challenging, especially when the story was already a beloved sci-fi film. Hopefully, this new version will become a hit with today’s audiences and establish Glen Powell as a major star. Everything suggests The Running Man has the potential to be something truly special, and it might be the best Stephen King adaptation of 2025.
