New Retro Xbox Game Pass Games Include Classic Sega CD Game

Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass has pleasantly surprised its users with the addition of a classic Sega game this week, which they weren’t anticipating. Interestingly, the game wasn’t developed by Sega but was originally released for the Sega CD in 1993. While it was also playable on Amiga, Mac, and MS-DOS, its popularity was largely confined to the Sega CD platform. Now, this Sega CD game has made its way to Xbox Game Pass through a fresh Retro Classics update. Unlike some games available on Xbox Game Pass, these retro titles can be accessed across all subscription tiers: Xbox Game Pass, Xbox Game Pass Standard, Xbox Game Pass PC, and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.

If you didn’t catch it, the new Retro Classics update on Xbox Game Pass now offers titles such as The Adventures of Willy Beamish, along with Caesar III, Climber 5, The Colonel’s Bequest, Private Eye, Oystron, Shootin’ Gallery, and Wing War. This collection contains a variety of Atari 2600 games, as well as some Amiga and vintage PC games. Interestingly, The Adventures of Willy Beamish is the sole representative from the Sega CD system in this release.

If you’re not familiar with this particular release, it initially appeared in 1991; however, it didn’t arrive on the Sega CD until 1993. This is a graphic adventure game created by Dynamix and Sierra Entertainment. Since the Retro Classics collection only includes games from Activision at present, you might be wondering how this Sierra Entertainment game ended up in the Retro Classics library. The reason is that Sierra Entertainment, along with its entire catalog, was eventually acquired by Activision.

A Classic in the Adventure Genre

Because The Adventures of Willy Beamish is an antique video game, finding any reviews about it can be quite challenging. Although it didn’t lead the way in the adventure game genre, its relevance during the development of the gaming industry positions it as a classic and historically significant release in many aspects.

About the Game

Imagine finding yourself as a nine-year-old again with your current knowledge. How much trouble would you potentially find yourself in? Remember your little sister who always tagged along. How far would you have to stretch to make her swing do a loop? The memory of Ms. Glass’ English class… Were you ever asked to spell “cardiac arrest” there? Good old mom and dad… Would you discard them quickly, now that I mention it, while pretending innocence and blaming your sister for everything? This is the adorably mischievous, twisted universe of Willy Beamish. Expect neurotic parents, teachers at their wit’s end, a ghostly grandfather returning from beyond, an insane babysitter, a frog pet on steroids, and a plan to destroy the city’s sewer system. It’s chaotic, it’s childish, it’s undoubtedly warped, but you’ll enjoy every moment of it.

The duration that this Sega CD game on Xbox Game Pass isn’t definitively known yet. Once we have more information, we’ll update our story accordingly.
