A recently released Square Enix game is already considered one of the best of 2026, ranking second alongside a few other highly-rated titles. Despite being a smaller, less publicized release, critics and players alike have given it excellent reviews, suggesting it’s worth a look. However, it’s currently only available on Nintendo Switch and PC, which may limit who can play it.
The new Square Enix game, Paranormasight: The Mermaid’s Curse, currently has a score of 86 on Metacritic. While this probably won’t make it one of the top games of the year, it’s a solid score, especially so early in the year. User reviews seem to confirm that the score is well-earned.
Square Enix Sequel Flying Under the Radar
If you’re unfamiliar, Paranormasight: The Mermaid’s Curse is the follow-up to Paranormasight: The Seven Mysteries of Honjo, which came out in 2023. Both games are published by Square Enix, but developed by the Japanese studio Xeen. The original game was released on mobile, PC, and Nintendo Switch, and remained a Switch exclusive. This makes it less likely that the new game will appear on PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X. The first Paranormasight game received a very positive score of 85 on Metacritic.
You can play Paranormasight: The Mermaid’s Curse even if you haven’t played the first game – it’s a completely separate story. However, those who have played the first game will get even more out of it.
Strong Reviews for the Visual Novel
Similar to the first game, Paranormasight: The Mermaid’s Curse is a well-received mystery visual novel. It boasts an impressive score of 86 on Metacritic and strong positive feedback from players. While Nintendo Switch users can’t leave reviews directly on the eShop, the game has gathered 569 user reviews on Steam with a 95% approval rating since its release on February 19th. This high score has earned it Steam’s highest distinction: “Overwhelmingly Positive.”
If you’re thinking of trying the new Square Enix game, it costs $25 and takes around 15 hours to complete. The game is set in the Ise-Shima region of Japan, a place famous for its mermaid folklore. You’ll play alongside a diverse group of characters, working together to solve the region’s mysteries by seeing things from each of their unique viewpoints.
