Over the years, the world of Star Trek has evolved significantly. Starting with Captain Kirk and his crew discovering new worlds, the franchise has expanded to include different captains and crews across various timelines and alternate realities. Now, a newly confirmed story is poised to dramatically change the established Star Trek canon. Khan, a classic and well-known villain, is set to have an even greater influence on the series than ever before.
The audio drama Star Trek: Khan recently concluded its run after premiering on September 8th. Instead of giving Khan a new backstory, the series explored the years he spent stranded on Ceti Alpha V with his crew. Writer Kirsten Beyer recently spoke with TrekMovie.com about how the story fits into the established Star Trek timeline and will be considered official canon going forward. Here’s what she shared:
Here’s the current understanding. There isn’t an official authority that declares something ‘canon.’ However, the team currently making Star Trek will consider Star Trek: Khan to be canon. This means they won’t ignore it or change its established details, and they’ll try to include it in future stories whenever they can.
Khan’s Comeback
Although the audio drama concluded with its final episode earlier this month, Beyer believes there’s potential for Khan’s story to continue as an audio series. The team enjoyed making it and feels confident they could create more, but there are currently no firm plans.
Following the positive reception to this recent story, Beyer shared her interest in developing new Star Trek series in a similar style. She’s particularly keen on creating entirely original narratives that could potentially span multiple seasons, finding that approach more appealing than revisiting established storylines. She feels this format offers more creative freedom and long-term potential.
Khan, one of Star Trek‘s most famous villains, first appeared in the original series, portrayed by Ricardo Montalban. Montalban reprised the role in the acclaimed film Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Though Montalban passed away in 2009, the character of Khan lived on with Benedict Cumberbatch taking on the role in 2013’s Star Trek: Into Darkness. Surprisingly, Khan recently reappeared in the series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, but as a child and in a very different context than fans had previously seen.
