A recently released documentary about the making of Stranger Things seems to resolve a long-running debate among fans. The creators, the Duffer Brothers, appear to have subtly dismissed the “Conformity Gate” theory, which has been a popular topic of discussion about how the show will end since it first aired.
Conformity Gate gets disproven again
Netflix released One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5 on January 12, 2026.
This documentary debunks the popular fan theory called “Conformity Gate.” It reveals that the Duffer brothers were still writing the final episode even after filming had started, and that scenes were shot before the script was finished. Ultimately, the final version of the show doesn’t contain any hidden clues or suggest alternative endings.
During the final read-through of the script, Matt Duffer emphasized to the cast that all the meaning and emotion of the show – the experience, the characters, everything – was already within the writing itself, not hidden in how things looked. The set designers even built large locations before receiving the complete script, proving that the production wasn’t influenced by any last-minute additions or alternate endings.
The “Conformity Gate” theory proposed that Vecna didn’t actually die in the show’s finale, and instead created a false reality trapping the characters and audience. Fans pointed to things like the graduation poses resembling Henry Creel, a mistake about Melvald’s milkshakes, and other small continuity issues as evidence. A TikTok video showing Mr. Clarke in front of a clock displaying 1:07 led to speculation that Netflix would release a hidden final episode on January 7th.
So, we didn’t get a surprise new episode that day, even though Netflix seemed to have some issues. The documentary itself doesn’t hint at any secret installments or hidden Easter eggs. What it does show is the real struggle to finish Season 5, and how the creative vision for the show changed and developed as they raced against the clock. It’s a behind-the-scenes look at the challenges they faced, and how the show came together.
The video doesn’t offer any evidence the Duffer brothers created or shot an alternate ending. This disproves the main idea behind the “Conformity Gate” theory.
