A new game is currently topping the Steam best-sellers list, surpassing both Crimson Desert and the highly anticipated Pragmata. While Pragmata is considered a strong contender for Game of the Year, it’s been temporarily overshadowed by this surprise hit – a new survival game that just launched in Steam Early Access.
Just recently, a brand new indie developer called Kraken Express launched their first game, Windrose. It’s a pirate-themed survival adventure where players team up against the environment, and it’s been a huge success! Currently, Windrose is the top-selling game on Steam and boasts a very positive 89% approval rating from over 13,000 players. What makes this even more remarkable is that the game is still in early access – meaning it’s not fully finished – and usually these versions aren’t as refined.
2026’s Best Pirate Game
Windrose is a pirate game where you’ll need to build, craft, and survive – the core elements of the genre. But here, you’re not just battling the elements; you’re competing against other players as you explore both land and sea. The game features a variety of randomly generated environments filled with quests, dungeons, and secrets. To succeed, you’ll need a ship and a crew, and engage in naval combat, including boarding enemy vessels. The action flows seamlessly between ship-to-ship battles and exploring on foot. With a 89% positive rating, it seems to be a quality experience, especially considering the $30 price tag for this early access title.
Honestly, I was so fed up with losing everything I worked for to cheaters in other games. But this one? It’s a total game-changer! Finally, I can just relax, explore, build things with my friends, and actually enjoy the game without constantly worrying about someone ruining it all. It’s seriously fun and gives you so much freedom to progress at your own pace.
It’s still unclear how long the game will be in early access, but development is ongoing, though at a pace expected from an independent studio rather than a large AAA developer. Player retention has been good so far, with a peak of over 222,000 concurrent players. While that number has dipped slightly to around 196,000 in the last 24 hours, nearly 200,000 players playing at the same time is still a very impressive number.
Just so you know, the new PC game isn’t officially “Steam Deck Verified.” However, Valve says it is “Playable” on the Steam Deck. While this could change in the future, there are currently no plans to update its verification status.
