A recent update about an upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 game indirectly offers some clues about when the next Super Smash Bros. game might be released. Unfortunately, this news isn’t what fans hoping for a quick release were hoping to hear.
The most recent Super Smash Bros. game, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, came out in 2018, making it seven years old. Considering the longest wait between Super Smash Bros. games has been seven years, it’s surprising we haven’t even heard about a new one yet. Based on past releases, a new game should have been announced, if not already released, but currently, fans are left with only rumors and guesses.
The Kirby Dilemma
The long wait for new content is largely because Sora, the studio led by Masahiro Sakurai, the creator of Super Smash Bros., has been focused on Kirby Air Riders 2, which is scheduled to launch on November 20, 2025. For a while, it wasn’t known if the game would receive any updates or extra content after release. However, it’s now confirmed that Kirby Air Riders 2 will not have any downloadable content or ongoing support after its initial release.
Okay, so this isn’t official yet, but it’s looking like they’re probably going to start working on the next Super Smash Bros. game pretty soon – likely at the beginning of next year. I’m guessing the team will take a well-deserved break after Kirby Air Riders 2 comes out. It all hinges on whether Sora’s next game is the next Smash, but honestly, that feels like a pretty solid bet for a bunch of reasons.
Vital Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Context
How does all of this relate to when the next Super Smash Bros. game might come out? Let’s imagine that development has already begun in some way and will be fully underway by early 2026. If it takes about as long to make as Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, we can estimate a potential release timeframe.
So, I’ve been thinking about the next Super Smash Bros. game. Ultimate took about two and a half to three years to make, and if the new one takes a similar amount of time, we’re probably looking at a release sometime between mid-2028 and early 2029. That would mean it comes out somewhere in the middle of the Nintendo Switch 2’s lifespan, which is pretty cool to think about!
This is just our educated guess, based on everything we know about the series so far. Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments or discuss it on our forums!
