Today, Microsoft has released a highly anticipated free update for both Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S owners, a move that long-time Xbox enthusiasts are sure to appreciate. Occasionally, Microsoft quietly pushes out updates for their Xbox consoles, introducing new features on the platform. While these aren’t significant console overhauls, they do include offerings previously unavailable on the platform. The latest update in this vein is now live, and it’s one of the best that Xbox has rolled out in a while.
The download in question, which users have acquired for free, is a new Dynamic Background theme celebrating video game studio Rare and its four-decade-long history of game releases. This visual art showcases various characters from popular games such as Banjo-Kazooie, Perfect Dark, Battletoads, Jet Force Gemini, Sea of Thieves, Viva Pinata, Kameo: Elements of Power, and Conker’s Bad Fur Day, among others. As most of these games were initially released on older Xbox consoles or other platforms like the Nintendo 64, this free offer will likely be cherished by long-time fans the most.
You can get a look at the artwork of this new Xbox Dynamic Background in the post from Rare below:
Over the past 40 years, we’ve been honored to have you, Rare Ltd fans! Whether you’re a dedicated gamer from our series or someone who’s dropped by one of our virtual worlds, we want to express our gratitude. To the diverse team of creatives that bring our magic to life in the Midlands, here it is: THANK YOU!

To apply the fresh Dynamic Background to your personal Xbox dashboard, it’s quite straightforward. Simply navigate to the Settings area on your Xbox console, and look for the “Personalization” option within this menu. Inside this section, you’ll find a selection called “My Background”. This is where all the Dynamic Backgrounds are kept. Locate the new Rare art in this section, and then set it as the primary background for your Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S.
If past patterns are any indication, it’s likely that Xbox will offer a free Dynamic Background around significant anniversaries. For instance, this year they provided a similar design to celebrate Microsoft’s 50th anniversary. So, keep an eye out for upcoming Xbox milestones as there’s a possibility of receiving a new Dynamic Background in celebration.
