Hulu is always adding new shows and movies to its library. In September 2025, they added a recent film starring Nicolas Cage. Coming after his roles in movies like *Pig*, *Renfield*, and *Dream Scenario*, and before his upcoming film *Longlegs*, Cage appeared in a strange and visually unique movie from 2024 that’s now available on Hulu – though it might not appeal to all viewers.
The 2024 Australian psychological thriller, *The Surfer*, is now available to stream on Hulu as of September 25th. The film, directed by Lorcan Finnegan and written by Thomas Martin, stars Nicolas Cage as a father who goes back to his childhood beach to surf with his son. Their trip takes a dark turn when they encounter hostility from the local community. Publicly shamed, the father finds himself caught up in a growing feud that tests his limits. The cast also includes Julian McMahon, Nic Cassim, Miranda Tapsell, Alexander Bertrand, Justin Rosniak, Finn Little, Rahel Romahn, Charlotte Maggi, and Nina Young. *The Surfer* premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival and had a limited theatrical release in the U.S. in May before becoming available for streaming.
Why You Should Watch The Surfer
Critics and audiences had mixed reactions to *The Surfer*, but most agree that Nicolas Cage delivers a remarkably captivating, if strange, performance. He convincingly portrays a man losing his grip on reality against the beautiful backdrop of Australia, grounding the film’s otherwise dreamlike quality. *The Surfer* is a wild, psychological ride filled with bizarre humor, striking visuals, and a daring story that will stay with you. It’s not for everyone, but it’s worth checking out.
Okay, let’s talk about *The Surfer*. While it doesn’t land among Nicolas Cage’s very best – critics gave it an 85% ‘Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which puts it somewhere in the middle of his filmography, not the top ten – it’s certainly no flop. Interestingly, audiences weren’t quite as impressed, giving it a ‘Rotten’ score of 46%. Considering it only played in a limited number of theaters, its worldwide gross of around $2.1 million isn’t bad at all.
New Movies Streaming on Hulu
As a movie buff, I’ve been checking out what’s new on Hulu, and September 2025 is shaping up to be a great month! They’re really loading up the platform, especially on September 1st. I was excited to see a ton of familiar favorites dropped all at once – everything from classics like *Clueless* and the original *Space Jam* to comedies like *The 40-Year-Old Virgin* and *School of Rock*. They’ve also got *Amsterdam*, *The Bob’s Burgers Movie*, the first two *How to Train Your Dragon* films, *Jennifer’s Body*, the original *Mean Girls*, and even *World War Z*. Definitely something for everyone!
Throughout the month, Hulu has been adding new movies and shows, including titles like *Werewolves Within*, *The Rental*, *The Shallows*, and *Dead Poets Society*. Before the month is over, Hulu will also be streaming *Ghostbusters: Answer the Call*, *Dragon Ball Z Battle of Gods*, and *Bloody Axe Wound*.
