Nicholas Brendon had a close friend nearby in his final moments.
Following the death of actor Nick Corddry, known for his role in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Putnam County Coroner Todd Zeiner shared early details from the investigation into his passing, which occurred at his New York home on March 20th.
According to a statement released on March 25th, the individual who passed away lived by themselves and was found by a close friend who was staying overnight to help care for them. Authorities believe the death occurred very recently and are currently examining recent videos to see if they show any signs of previous health issues.
The coroner reported that 54-year-old Nicholas appeared to be sleeping when he was found.
The name of Nicholas’ friend has not been released. While the official autopsy results are still being finalized, his family stated they believe he died from natural causes, considering his existing health conditions: a rare spinal problem called cauda equina syndrome and congenital heart defects.
Nicholas had faced challenges in the past, but he was receiving medical treatment and felt hopeful about the future, his family shared with The Hollywood Reporter on March 20th. They ask for privacy as they mourn his death and remember a man who lived life with passion, creativity, and kindness. They are grateful for the outpouring of love and support.
It just absolutely wrecked me when I heard about Nicholas. He was Xander, you know? From Buffy—the show with Sarah Michelle Gellar, of course!—and it was so amazing to see all his old castmates sharing how much they loved and respected him. It meant so much, honestly, seeing all those tributes pour in. He was a huge part of my childhood, and it was just… heartbreaking.

Alyson Hannigan, known for her role as Willow Rosenberg, shared a heartfelt message saying, “My Sweet Nicky, thank you for all the years of laughter, love, and for sharing our love of the Dodgers.” She added that she’ll always remember him when she sees a rocking chair, and finished with a loving “I love you. Rest in peace.”
Emma Caufield, known for her role as Anya Jenkins, shared a heartfelt message after the news, writing, “Rest Nicky. Rest. I love you.”
