With the Marvel Cinematic Universe now a massive and hugely successful film franchise, it’s easy to overlook earlier live-action adaptations of Marvel characters, like the Ghost Rider movie starring Nicolas Cage.
I was so excited to see that both Ghost Rider and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance are now available to stream on Tubi! The first movie is about Johnny Blaze, a stunt rider who made a deal with the devil to save his family, and now the devil is coming to collect. The sequel picks up with Johnny still trying to control the Ghost Rider curse, but he gets a chance to find some peace when he’s asked to help protect a boy from Satan himself. It’s great that I can watch these for free!
The Ghost Rider movies, which began in the mid-2000s, weren’t well-received by critics. The films currently have a 28% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 48% audience score, indicating widespread disappointment. Scott Huver of Hollywood.com called it “the worst adaptation of a Marvel Comics hero yet,” a sentiment shared by many. Tom Meek from the Boston Phoenix suggested that Nicolas Cage’s performance was the only thing saving the film, while Joe Lozito of Big Picture Big Sound labeled it a forgettable, cash-grab superhero movie.
Critics strongly disliked Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance when it came out in 2011. The film, the second Ghost Rider movie starring Nicolas Cage, received a very low 18% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a disappointing 31% audience score. Grae Drake of Movies.com suggested viewers skip it and instead rent Drive Angry, noting that film utilized skulls more effectively. Dave White, also from Movies.com, expressed feeling “cheated and sad” in his review.
Will Ghost Rider Join The Marvel Cinematic Universe?
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is growing quickly and shows no signs of stopping, continuing to develop stories after the events of the Infinity Saga. We’ve seen new characters and teams introduced, marking a new era for Marvel Studios. With plans to incorporate the X-Men from 20th Century Fox into future projects like Avengers: Doomsday, and the recent return of characters like Blade (played by Wesley Snipes), it’s very likely we could see Ghost Rider join the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well.
Marvel hasn’t announced if or when Ghost Rider will appear in the main Marvel Cinematic Universe. Even if he does, the actor who plays him – currently Johnny Blaze – might be replaced. There were reports that Robert Pattinson was once considered for the role in an early version of an Avengers movie, but those rumors haven’t been confirmed. Ultimately, it’s unclear if adding Ghost Rider would be a meaningful story choice or simply a way for Marvel to promote their films.
