Nick Torres’ fate after NCIS season 23 is finally revealed.
The 2025-2026 season was a dramatic one for NCIS, CBS’s long-running show. The season saw the returns of Vera Strickland and Ellie Bishop, each with their own storylines. Then, Timothy McGee received a huge surprise with the discovery of a son he didn’t know about, followed quickly by the temporary closure of the agency and the death of Director Leon Vance. The final episode of season 23 tied up loose ends from the past while also hinting at what’s to come.
After a period of uncertainty, the latest season of NCIS successfully returned to its classic style. The season finale, “Sons and Daughters,” didn’t focus on a large, overarching plot, but instead centered on personal stories. Kayla Vance dealt with her father’s legacy, and McGee’s son, Mateo, explored the possibility of an internship with the agency. However, it was revealed that Mateo was involved in some questionable activities, leading to a tense confrontation with Torres.
The season 23 finale of NCIS ended with a gunshot at the Navy Yard, leaving viewers wondering if Torres had been shot by Mateo. In an interview with TV Insider, showrunner Steven D. Binder clarified what happened and confirmed Torres’s fate, assuring fans that another main character didn’t die. Here’s what Binder said:
I can confirm someone was injured, but it wasn’t fatal. Honestly, I’m tired of dealing with deaths – we’ve all had enough of that this season. It’s simply more compelling to investigate when someone is alive, even after being shot. When someone dies, the case is closed. I’m referring to ‘interesting’ cases, not ‘fun’ in a literal sense – think back to when Gibbs shot McGee; that was a more engaging situation because McGee survived.
Okay, so I was relieved to hear Torres survives the season 23 finale! But just because he’s alive doesn’t mean everything’s okay. The showrunner hinted someone did get hurt in that fight, and honestly, I’m worried it might be Mateo. He was so visibly shaken during the whole thing, and Torres is usually so capable in those situations. Losing Vance was devastating, and I really don’t want to see another main character die. But if Mateo is seriously hurt, it’s going to cause a ton of drama within the team, and that would be almost as bad, in my opinion.
It’s understandable that McGee is so enthusiastic about being a father to Mateo, considering he wasn’t present for the first twenty years of his son’s life – through no fault of his own. Because of this, he might naturally side with Mateo, particularly if Mateo claims he’s innocent. While McGee isn’t a bad person, the fact that someone is using him could cause significant problems for the MCRT team in NCIS season 24, on top of the already concerning return of Gabriel LaRoche.
Fans are relieved to learn that Torres won’t be killed off when NCIS season 4 returns. However, viewers will still have to be patient, as the show is now on its summer break. CBS plans to release new episodes between September and October, which is earlier than some expected – avoiding a midseason wait.
