Nickelodeon is known for bringing its popular cartoon characters together, and there have been many instances of NickToons appearing in each other’s worlds through video games, specials, and movies. Characters from shows like Rugrats, The Wild Thornberrys, and Aaahh!! Real Monsters have teamed up before. However, not all crossover ideas come to fruition. A well-known animator recently revealed that a potential team-up between SpongeBob SquarePants and another major Nickelodeon series was considered, but ultimately didn’t happen.
Animator Butch Hartman, creator of The Fairly Oddparents and Danny Phantom, recently shared that a crossover between his characters and those from SpongeBob SquarePants almost happened. Hartman, who was friends with SpongeBob creator Steve Hillenburg, proposed the idea to Nickelodeon. While Hillenburg was enthusiastic, Nickelodeon executives rejected it, wanting to keep both franchises separate. Hartman found this odd, as he had previously successfully done a crossover with Jimmy Neutron. You can watch a video about this reveal below.
The Crossover That Never Was

I was so excited when I first thought about a SpongeBob SquarePants and Fairly OddParents crossover! But apparently, Paramount just wasn’t having it – they wouldn’t let me near SpongeBob! I guess they saw him as their biggest star and didn’t want to risk it. Honestly, I think it would have been amazing. It’s funny, because before Nickelodeon even bought The Fairly OddParents, I was actually offered a job as an animator on SpongeBob! In a recent video, I got to brainstorm all sorts of crossover ideas and even sketched out how all the characters would look together – it was a blast!
The futures of the two Nickelodeon series, The Fairly OddParents and SpongeBob SquarePants, are heading in very different directions. The Fairly OddParents recently made a comeback with a new, computer-animated series, The Fairly OddParents: A New Wish, which has 20 episodes so far. However, it’s currently unknown if the show will be renewed for another season. SpongeBob SquarePants, on the other hand, is already in its sixteenth season and continues to be popular after many years. With several movies recently released in theaters and on streaming services, Nickelodeon shows no signs of slowing down with the SpongeBob SquarePants franchise. Despite this, the creator, Hartman, still hopes to eventually make a crossover happen between the two shows, so it’s still a possibility.
