Nickelodeon Animator Drops Out of A.I. Program Following Backlash

Jorge R. Gutierrez is a well-known animator who has worked on popular shows like El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera, Maya And The Three, and El Macho. He’s now set to direct a Speedy Gonzalez movie as part of the Looney Tunes franchise. Recently, Gutierrez announced his desire to revive a classic Nickelodeon show, but many fans reacted negatively when they discovered he was also collaborating with Amazon on using artificial intelligence in animation. Following the backlash, Gutierrez has issued a new statement.

Gutierrez announced on social media that he’s leaving Amazon’s AI animation project after receiving significant criticism. He said he’s been carefully considering the feedback and understands concerns about using AI in animation. He expressed gratitude to those who were understanding and stated he’s decided to cancel the planned Punky Duck series. Gutierrez explained his original goal was to highlight the work of artists using this new technology, and he sincerely apologized to anyone he upset, promising to be more considerate in the future. He thanked everyone for their patience.

Jorge’s Departure

Amazon has faced criticism for its use of artificial intelligence, particularly after a failed attempt to create English dubs for anime series like Banana Fish and Vinland Saga. These AI-generated dubs were widely disliked by fans and quickly removed from Amazon Prime Video. Given this past experience, many fans were disappointed to learn about Amazon’s new animated projects, fearing a repeat of the previous AI dub issues.

Jorge Gutierrez has been in the news recently because he announced he’s discussing a revival of his popular show, El Tigre, which ended years ago. He’s also hoping to include other classic Nickelodeon cartoons like My Life as a Teenage Robot and Invader Zim in the project, and has already gotten the go-ahead from their creators. Although it’s not certain to happen, Gutierrez shared at MomoCon that he’s currently in conversations with Paramount about it, all while also working on projects for Netflix and Warner Bros.
