Fans of NieR Automata recently received disappointing news regarding a sequel. It’s been nine years since the release of the critically acclaimed game, considered one of Square Enix’s best titles of the last decade and PlatinumGames’ best in nearly a decade. Many expected a sequel by now, and while one is reportedly in development, details remain secret and a release doesn’t seem imminent.
If you’re excited about a potential new NieR game, a livestream is scheduled for February 20th to celebrate the series’ 9th anniversary. While many are hoping for a sequel announcement, there are currently no plans to reveal one during the stream.
Disappointing News Ahead of NieR: Automata’s 9th Anniversary Livestream
Before the livestream event, it’s been announced that they won’t be sharing any news about new games – likely to manage expectations for the anniversary celebration. While they might drop a small hint or mention a sequel, don’t count on any major announcements, and even those small comments aren’t certain.
It’s surprising it’s taken so long to announce a new NieR Automata game. The original sold almost 10 million copies and received excellent reviews, all despite being part of a relatively unknown series. Most players discovering it in 2017 were new to NieR, and many didn’t even realize it was connected to the Drakengard games. While Square Enix and PlatinumGames might be building anticipation slowly, hoping to create a lot of excitement, it’s usually better to follow up on a success quickly. The series hasn’t been completely inactive – the Nier Replicant ver.1.22474487139… remaster came out in 2021 – but many fans expected a sequel to Automata to be announced by now, around 2026.
We’d love to hear your thoughts! Please leave a comment below or join the discussion on the ComicBook Forum. Do you think it took PlatinumGames and Square Enix too long to release a new NieR game?
