It appears that “Night at the Museum” is being reimagined, but there’s currently no sign of its most notable character. As reported by Deadline on Wednesday, 21 Laps is producing a new version of this franchise with 20th Century Studios. This revamp will feature fresh characters in a different museum setting. Names like Tripper Clancy (writer) and producers Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, and Emily Morris are already connected to the project, but no actors have been confirmed yet. The storyline seems to suggest that we may not see Ben Stiller’s character Larry Daley in this iteration. However, given Stiller’s recent roles as a producer and director, it’s possible his name will still appear in the credits somehow.
The reboot of “Night at the Museum” is in its initial development stages, as per sources, with Clancy penning the script for the film, though a completed script has not yet been revealed. At present, Clancy is engaged in crafting a fresh version of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” for Netflix, leaving the timeline for the museum’s return uncertain. It remains to be seen whether this new adaptation will connect in any way to the 1993 Milan Trenc children’s book that formed the basis for Stiller’s film.
The story, titled “Night at the Museum,” revolves around Larry, a struggling inventor who lands a night security guard position at New York City’s American Museum of Natural History. His ex-wife criticizes him as a poor role model for their 10-year-old son, while the boy appears to be following in the footsteps of his stepfather, a thriving Wall Street trader. However, Larry stumbles upon an unexpected truth: during the night, the museum’s exhibits magically spring to life, turning his seemingly mundane job into a perilous adventure.
The film made a big splash when it premiered in 2006, and it went on to spawn three more movies. The second movie, “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian,” came out in 2009, followed by “Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb” in 2014. A fourth animated film titled “Night at the Museum: Kahmunrah Rises Again” premiered on Disney+ in 2022.
Considering the circumstances, it’s no shock that the franchise is due for a fresh start, given the limited number of museums globally. As the production progresses, there are numerous opportunities for Stiller to contribute without being in front of the camera. These days, he has garnered almost equal fame as a director, particularly with his successful TV series Severance. He is also a busy producer, and fans would eagerly welcome his involvement in this project in some capacity.
I’m excitedly awaiting updates about the reboot of “Night at the Museum,” which is currently in its initial development phase, with neither a confirmed release date nor specific production information yet. Fortunately, you can enjoy the four preceding movies right now by streaming them on Disney+!
