Nintendo Direct Rumor Points to June 9, But Nintendo Has Yet to Announce Its Next Showcase

This article first appeared on Game Empress, a website covering gaming news. You can find the original post and more at gameempress.com, where rumors suggest a Nintendo Direct presentation might happen on June 9th, though Nintendo hasn’t officially confirmed any plans yet.

Nintendo hasn’t hosted a major presentation this year, but a new rumor suggests one might happen on June 9th. It’s currently unknown what kind of presentation it will be. Here’s a breakdown of what we know, what’s still uncertain, and why that date is being talked about.

Nintendo Has Not Confirmed a June Direct

As of June 3, 2026, Nintendo hasn’t announced a general Nintendo Direct presentation for June. Their last big showcase was in September 2025, and since then they’ve only had smaller presentations focused on individual games. They haven’t yet held a large event to highlight software for the Switch 2.

Nintendo has informed investors that they have more games in development planned for release later this year. This suggests we’ll be hearing about new titles soon, but it doesn’t confirm any specific date for a presentation or reveal event.

Where the June 9 Rumor Started

A Spanish gaming source, Nash Weedle, has suggested a Nintendo Direct presentation could happen on June 9th. He didn’t state the date outright, but hinted at it by referencing the U.S. release date of the game Animal Crossing: New Leaf, which came out on June 9, 2013. He used this date as a subtle clue.

Weedle has previously made predictions about Nintendo, but his accuracy hasn’t been officially confirmed with large-scale data. He didn’t say what kind of event to expect, so it’s unclear if it will be a major presentation like a full Nintendo Direct or a smaller, focused one.

Nintendo has not responded to or acknowledged the claim.

What Jeff Grubb Has — and Has Not — Corroborated

As a Nintendo fan, I’m getting really excited because Jeff Grubb said he’s heard a Nintendo Direct is happening before the middle of June! That lines up with the rumors about June 9th, but it’s not a confirmation. He doesn’t know if it’ll be a big, general Direct with lots of announcements, or something smaller and more focused, but he thinks it’ll probably be a full-on Direct considering when it’s expected to happen.

We have two separate reports suggesting a similar timeframe, but only one mentions a precise date. Importantly, Nintendo hasn’t confirmed any of this.

Nintendo’s Official 2026 Direct Schedule So Far

Nintendo’s own Direct archive shows the following for 2026 up to this point:

  • No general Nintendo Direct has aired in 2026. The last one was September 2025.
  • Smaller Nintendo-led presentations have taken place, but none functioning as a broad software showcase.

There’s a clear pattern in Nintendo’s presentations. They’ve consistently held a major showcase event in June each year – in 2024 and 2023 it was a general Direct, and in 2022 a Partner Showcase. The only recent exception was 2025, when they dedicated the June presentation to Donkey Kong content and moved the main showcase to September, coinciding with the launch of the new Switch 2 console.

We haven’t had a major Nintendo Direct presentation yet in 2024. This, along with hints from investors about unrevealed games, makes the rumor of a June 9th presentation seem more likely, even without considering the initial claim.

Confirmed Switch 2 Games That Could Use a Spotlight

A few Nintendo games already scheduled to come out in 2026 are nearing their release dates, making it a good time to showcase them in a Nintendo Direct presentation.

Title Status Date
Star Fox Confirmed June 25, 2026
Rhythm Heaven Groove Confirmed July 2, 2026
Splatoon Raiders Confirmed July 23, 2026
Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave Confirmed 2026 TBA

With Star Fox scheduled to launch on June 25th, it would only be two weeks after the June 9th Nintendo Direct. It’s typical for games to get a dedicated showcase before they come out, so an appearance now would be expected.

According to industry insider NateTheHate, a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is currently planned for release in the latter half of 2026, and a new 3D Mario game is in development for 2027. While it’s uncertain if we’ll see either of these games announced in June, the reported holiday release timeframe for the Zelda remake suggests a summer reveal isn’t out of the question.

Why Fans Are Watching June 9

The date lands inside the busiest gaming showcase week of the year:

Date Event
June 2 (US) / June 3 (some regions) PlayStation State of Play
June 5 Summer Game Fest (Dolby Theatre, Los Angeles)
June 7 Xbox Games Showcase
June 9 Nintendo Direct (rumored)

Although Nintendo isn’t officially participating in Summer Game Fest, they regularly hold their own events around the same time. Scheduling their event for June 9th would allow them to stand out – following presentations from Sony, Summer Game Fest, and Xbox – and have the spotlight all to themselves.

This approach fits with Nintendo’s typical strategy for June: they usually announce things separately, as individual events, and on their own timeline. While this doesn’t guarantee anything will happen on June 9th, it definitely makes it a date to keep an eye on.
