Nintendo is taking content out of a seven-year-old game that’s only available on the Switch, and many fans are unhappy about it. Nintendo generally doesn’t offer much support for its games after they’re released, which puts it behind other companies in this area. While there have been a few exceptions – like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which received several years of updates despite a somewhat slow start – this particular game hasn’t received much support at all, even though it’s been popular.
Players of Super Mario Maker 2 on Nintendo Switch (or potentially Switch 2 if it’s backward compatible) have noticed a lack of updates and support from Nintendo. Fans have repeatedly asked for a feature from the original Super Mario Maker – the ability to bookmark levels – but it hasn’t been added, even though it would be a relatively simple change. It’s now unlikely to ever be implemented. Ironically, Nintendo has found time to remove a large amount of user-created content from the game.
Nintendo vs Super Mario Maker 2 Fans
Recently, many Nintendo and Super Mario Maker 2 fans have noticed that Nintendo has been removing thousands of player-created levels. Nintendo says the levels were taken down because they contained advertising. Specifically, the levels were promoting a popular Discord server called Team Shell within the game’s community. Creators used hashtags within their levels to help players find them, as the game lacks a good search or bookmarking system – a problem players have experienced before.
Although there’s a good reason for this activity, it still violates Nintendo’s user agreement, leading them to remove content created by dedicated fans. It’s unusual for Nintendo to moderate a game they haven’t actively updated in years, suggesting a possible coordinated reporting effort. Ultimately, though, the content is gone, and fans’ solutions for finding things in the game no longer work.
A key point is that Nintendo hasn’t said anything about this situation. We don’t anticipate that changing, but we’ll let you know if they do. Right now, fans are understandably frustrated.
One fan expressed frustration, asking Nintendo why they seem to be abandoning Super Mario Maker 2 and upsetting its dedicated players and competitive level creators. They pleaded with Nintendo to stop deleting user-created levels.
