As a dedicated gamer, it’s been over eight years since I got my hands on the Nintendo Switch, and let me tell you, it’s been quite a journey! The variety of games available is simply incredible, covering every genre imaginable. When it comes to horror, this console hasn’t disappointed either. From the chilling installments of Resident Evil and Five Nights at Freddy’s, to lesser-known gems like The Mortuary Assistant, there’s always something new and terrifying to explore.
And guess what? This month, the horror library is about to grow even larger! If you’re a fan of this genre, keep your eyes peeled because the upcoming game has been making waves on other platforms. It’s definitely one to watch out for!
On July 24th, the game SOMA is set to arrive on the Nintendo Switch. First released in 2015 on PC and PS4, SOMA has received acclaim over the past decade. Currently, it boasts an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating on Steam with over 40,000 reviews. Despite never being available on Nintendo’s platform before, this is soon to change due to the efforts of developers Frictional Games and publishers Abylight Studios. In the trailer, it’s clear that the game SOMA combines horror and sci-fi genres. Set deep underwater in PATHOS-II, a research facility, players will traverse the site, encountering strange creatures while attempting to unravel puzzles and delve deeper into the game’s storyline, which includes elements of psychological horror. Similar to titles produced by Frictional Games, SOMA is presented from a first-person perspective and shares many of the features that made games like Amnesia successful. If you’re a fan of Amnesia, this game could be worth keeping an eye on.
For some time now, “Amnesia: The Dark Descent” and “Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs” have been available on Switch, but it’s only recently that “SOMA” has joined them. It’s hard to pinpoint why the delay occurred, but it’s clear that it’s better late than never when it comes to this game. Fans of horror games looking for fresh content should be thrilled by its arrival on Switch. Moreover, since “SOMA” is already praised critically, fans won’t have to wait for reviews to decide if they want to play it.
Although the Nintendo Switch 2 came out a month ago, it appears that the initial Nintendo Switch will continue to receive game releases up until 2025, and possibly even into 2026. Most Nintendo Switch games can run on the new Switch 2, but Abylight Studios has confirmed that the game SOMA is only playable on the latest model. This should alleviate any concerns about compatibility issues that have been popping up recently.
