Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers Are Being Discontinued on January 30, 2026

Nintendo has announced that it will no longer offer Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers, a feature introduced in 2023 exclusively for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers. With this feature, players could purchase two game vouchers for approximately $100, which they could then exchange for specific games from a special catalog.

The idea centered mainly on offering Nintendo Switch gamers a chance to purchase two games at a reduced cost, considering that games on this platform typically retail for $59.99. To begin with, the collection of games offered were primarily first-party titles, such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and both Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.

In their announcement regarding cancellation, Nintendo clarified that Switch Game Vouchers can be bought up until January 30, 2026. During this period, these vouchers will function as they always have, with each one maintaining its original year’s worth of validity for use in purchases.

As of the release date, the majority of games in the Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers collection are still primarily self-produced titles. Some of the newer additions to this collection include “The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom”, “Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition”, and a high definition version of “Donkey Kong Country Returns”.

In the Frequently Asked Questions section about the upcoming termination of their service, Nintendo has clarified that once Game Vouchers are bought, they cannot extend or alter their expiration dates. This implies that if you purchase a Game Voucher just before the service shuts down, it will remain valid until January 30, 2027.

It appears that Nintendo might be ending the Game Voucher system due to the increased pricing of first-party games for the Switch 2. Given Nintendo’s intention to sell its games on the Switch 2 at $80, it would be necessary for Game Vouchers to be around $140 if they were to offer a comparable discount.

In simpler terms, this implies that the business might decrease the rate at which it launches games for the initial Nintendo Switch, preferring to concentrate on the expanding fanbase of its more recent console instead.

Notably, mere days following the debut of Switch 2, Nintendo disclosed an increase in the price of the initial Switch model in Canada. They attributed this decision to “various market factors”.

In the interim, the company is experiencing a thriving debut of its console, specifically the Switch 2, which managed to sell an impressive 3.5 million units within its initial four days. As of now, detailed sales figures for this new device remain undisclosed. However, preliminary data from Circana analyst Mat Piscatella suggests that the Switch 2 has surpassed records in the US, toppling the PS4 as the fastest-selling console in history.

The Switch 2 retails for $449.99 individually, but if you opt for a special package that comes with “Mario Kart World,” it will cost you $499.99 instead. Notably, “Mario Kart World” typically sells for $79.99 on its own, so this bundle offers fans the game and console at a reduced price.
