Nintendo Switch Online will soon add games from three new consoles: a classic Nintendo system, a handheld Nintendo device, and a Sega console. While Nintendo hasn’t announced when these consoles will be supported, considering it took a year after the GameCube was added, it might be some time before we can play games from these new systems.
According to industry insider Nick Baker, who often reports on Xbox but also has sources at Nintendo, Nintendo Switch Online is planning to add games from three classic platforms: Wii, Nintendo DS, and Sega CD. Baker says the Wii games will likely be playable with a new Wii Remote that doesn’t need a sensor bar. DS games will probably use a separate screen attachment, while Sega CD games should work similarly to how other Sega consoles are currently supported on the service.
Sega CD

The Sega CD (also called the Mega CD) was an add-on for the Sega Genesis that let you play games on CD-ROM. It first came out in Japan in 1991, and then in the rest of the world in 1992. While not a huge success for Sega, it’s remembered for games like Sonic CD, Snatcher, and Lunar: The Silver Star. It’s particularly known for helping to make FMV (Full Motion Video) games popular, with Night Trap being the most famous example of that style.
Nintendo DS

Launched in 2004, the Nintendo DS is the best-selling handheld gaming console ever, with over 154 million units sold. Only two consoles have sold more copies: the Nintendo Switch (over 155 million) and the PlayStation 2 (over 160 million). Some of the most popular games for the DS include New Super Mario Bros, Mario Kart DS, Nintendogs, and Brain Age.
Nintendo Wii

The Nintendo Wii was incredibly popular and brought video games to a much wider audience, but surprisingly, it wasn’t the best-selling console ever. When you include handheld devices, it ranks only 6th in total sales. Although it was a huge hit when it first launched in 2006, its popularity didn’t last as long as some other consoles. Some of its most memorable games include Wii Sports, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Mario Kart Wii, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and both Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword.
The report doesn’t say which retro console will be added first, second, or third. However, other sources suggest the Nintendo DS is likely next, though it’s still possible the Sega CD could come before it. The Wii is not expected to be added anytime soon.
Currently, Nintendo is primarily concentrating on the GameCube, and that’s expected to continue into 2026. They recently added a classic GameCube title as part of this effort. However, the latest additions to the Nintendo Switch Online service are two games originally released on the Game Boy, which were added just this week.
