Team Ninja’s Nioh 3 feels like a completely fresh experience, even though it still takes place in Japan and focuses on battling Yokai. This time around, players will explore large, open levels with plenty of optional missions and opportunities to become more powerful.
Okay, so the initial reactions to the alpha test seem really good! But, like with any game, especially a tough one like Nioh, things still need some tweaking, mainly to get the difficulty balanced right. The producer, Fumihiko Yasuda, has said they’re focusing on smoothing things out so you don’t run into those frustrating, unexpectedly hard parts. It’s good to know they’re listening and working on making the experience as challenging and fair as possible!
He explained to Multiplayer.it that while some players have spent countless hours with the Nioh games, many others might be new to the series with Nioh 3, and he wants the game to be accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
We’ve included a detailed tutorial for new players, but kept it concise. Our main goal was to create a smooth difficulty curve – everything progresses naturally. Players now have more freedom to explore, though they’ll encounter powerful enemies in the open world. We’ve focused on giving players diverse strategies for defeating bosses, through both equipment and exploration. However, we’ve maintained the challenging gameplay our fans expect.
As a big fan, what really struck me about the direction Yasuda-san is taking with Nioh 3 is the idea of learning from defeat. He explained that getting beaten – like maybe in a demo at a show – can be annoying, but it’s what you do after that matters. He wants players to think about what they need to improve, what they need to get better at, and how to prepare so they can finally win. It’s not just about avoiding failure, it’s about using it to grow!
We wanted players to have lots of different ways to win and overcome the challenging bosses in the game. That feeling of accomplishment – finally beating a tough boss – is incredibly rewarding, and it was a key goal for us to deliver that same experience in Nioh 3.
This action RPG introduces several exciting features, including the ability to instantly switch between Ninja and Samurai combat styles. It also expands the game’s world with the Bakumatsu period, a first for the series. Players will even face off against the Shinsengumi in battle! And for those seeking a greater challenge, a New Game Plus mode with increased difficulty will be available when the game launches.
Nioh 3 will be released on February 6th, 2026, for both PlayStation 5 and PC. If you plan on playing on PC, be aware that you’ll need to be running Windows 11 and have an NVMe solid-state drive to meet the game’s requirements – you might need to upgrade if you haven’t already.
