Koei Tecmo and Team NINJA have announced that the next installment in the dark samurai action RPG series, Nioh 3, will be set during the Bakumatsu period, alongside the historical eras of Edo, Sengoku, and Heian.
Here are the details:
A dark future has arrived, completely changing the world after Kunimatsu, consumed by darkness, declares himself the immortal shogun.
Players will experience a brand new setting in Nioh 3: the Bakumatsu period. This marks the first time in the series that the game will take place during the final years of the samurai era, specifically in 1800s Kyoto. The Crucible’s power has corrupted the land and famous locations like Kiyomizu and Honnoji temples.
Players will battle not only terrifying demons, but also the Shinsengumi, a powerful military force loyal to the shogunate. These soldiers are tough opponents armed with modern weapons like guns and gatling guns, offering a new mix of long-range and attacks from all directions – something never before seen in the Nioh games.
As I play, I’m meeting a ton of cool, new characters specific to each time period. For example, when I’m in old Kyoto during the Bakumatsu era, I get to interact with guys like Takasugi Shinsaku and Okita Soji, and even Tokugawa Yoshinobu – who was a big deal as the 15th shogun! It’s awesome getting to know these historical figures.
Nioh 3 is due out for PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam on February 6, 2026.
