Nioh 3 Spirit Veins: What are they and how to use them

If you can’t figure out how to use Spirit Veins in Nioh 3, then you’re certainly not alone.

After defeating Yamagata Masakage and moving into the first main area, you’ll begin to notice glowing Spirit Veins scattered throughout the environment.

What you will also find, however, is that you can’t use them – so how exactly do they work?

It’s worth brushing up on how to parry and emote too, while you’re learning the new mechanics.

Before we get started, let’s quickly explain Spirit Veins and how they work in Nioh 3.

What are Spirit Veins in Nioh 3?

Spirit Veins are areas that require you to use the ability of a Guardian Spirit to traverse.

These spots are highlighted by a bright, golden glow and often present obstacles like impassable gaps or tall walls that block your path.

If you don’t have the necessary Guardian Spirit, these encounters will appear on your map with a locked hexagon icon and a message saying a compatible Guardian Spirit is needed.

You can’t find a Guardian Spirit that works with the Spirit Veins in the beginning area until you complete the Hanamatsu Castle Town Crucible, which is located to the west.

How to use Spirit Veins in Nioh 3 explained

After equipping a Guardian Spirit that works with the Spirit Vein you plan to use, simply approach the vein and stand within the golden glow.

With the correct Guardian Spirit, you’ll now receive the option to press R1/RB to ‘Traverse’.

When you see buttons appear on screen, hold them down to remove the obstacle. You’ll usually find rewards like items or treasure chests on the other side.
