Team Ninja has released a new set of previews for Nioh 3, and early signs are good. Based on improvements made since the initial alpha test, the game seems to be heading in the right direction. Koei Tecmo has also revealed that this installment will take players to the Bakumatsu period – a first for the Nioh series.
The Bakumatsu period (1853-1867) was a turning point in Japan, signaling the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate. The game takes players to real locations like Kiyomizu and Honnoji temples, but these places have been twisted by a powerful, demonic force called the Crucible. Players will battle both Yokai creatures and the Shinsengumi, the notorious military police force of the time.
Players will now be able to use guns for the first time, but close-quarters combat remains important – especially when facing powerful enemies like Okita Soji. The game also features key historical characters such as Takasugi Shinsaku and Tokugawa Yoshinobu, who both have significant roles in the story.
Nioh 3 launches on February 6th, 2026, for PS5 and PC.
