The Simpsons is back for its 37th season on Fox, and thankfully, the premiere didn’t involve the death of another beloved character. The show has been trying new things lately, both with how episodes are structured and with unexpected changes to the show’s world. This recently led to a significant death, and the latest premiere initially worried fans because it hinted at another character dying off-screen without anyone noticing.
The Simpsons Season 37 begins with an enjoyable episode focusing on the bond between Lisa and Marge, using 1990s pop culture as a backdrop. The two grow closer over a mutual interest in fashion and a popular teen TV show from that decade. However, a joke in the premiere suggests Lisa’s music teacher, Dewey Largo (or Mr. Largo), had died off-screen. Thankfully, the episode’s executive producers recently assured TV Line that this wasn’t actually true.
The Simpsons Execs Debunk Mr. Largo’s Death in Season 37 Premiere

The Simpsons Season 37 Episode 1, “Thrifty Ways to Thieve Your Mother,” features Lisa befriending a group of stylish students who ask her to join their fashion club. She’s surprised to find them meeting in a former music room and learns from her new friend, Deavin, that the room became available when Mr. Largo either passed away or was called for jury duty – something relatively minor. Thankfully, The Simpsons co-executive producers Cesar Mazariegos and Jessica Conrad have confirmed that the show did not kill off Mr. Largo as a fleeting joke.
I learned that Conrad, the writer behind the episode, wasn’t concerned about how fans would react to the joke. She actually said she’d even *welcome* some backlash, especially if people genuinely thought it meant the character was being written off without any on-screen scenes. Mazariegos added that if they were going to kill off a character who’d been with the show for a long time, they’d probably explore that storyline much more fully – likely with a dedicated episode – rather than just a quick, easily missed gag. It seems they really take those decisions seriously.
Why The Simpsons Doesn’t Kill Off Many Characters
You know, when we decided to write off Larry the Barfly last year, it sparked a huge debate. We were going back and forth – ‘How do we handle this? Should it be him, or that guy with the trucker hat?’ – anything that warrants a whole episode definitely gets a lot of thought, as I noted. But honestly, we generally try to avoid killing off characters permanently. It’s such a cartoonish universe! We all know that even if Moleman is involved in, say, a car explosion, it doesn’t necessarily mean he’s gone for good. Still, considering the fan reaction to character deaths in the past, it makes total sense why The Simpsons team would be extra careful with these things.
Just the possibility of a beloved, longtime character like Marge potentially dying in the future of The Simpsons caused fans to worry the show might be writing her out completely. It makes sense why the creators are cautious about making big changes like this. Even though Mr. Largo hasn’t been featured much lately, his removal would still affect viewers.
