Robert Eggers, the director known for his chilling films like “Nosferatu”, has chosen Aaron Taylor-Johnson of “Avengers: Age of Ultron” and “Kraven the Hunter” fame to star as the lead in his upcoming horror movie titled “Werwulf”. As per Deadline, this medieval werewolf film is expected to hit theatres in December 2026. Notably, Eggers has a habit of releasing top-tier horror during the holiday season. Although details about the story are being kept secret, Eggers has shared that “Werwulf” will be his darkest work yet, implying a grim and brutal narrative. Co-written with frequent collaborator Sjón, the movie is set in 13th-century England.
Besides Taylor-Johnson, there are discussions underway for Lily-Rose Depp to join the cast, but her specific role has not been finalized yet. This project also brings Eggers together with producers Chris and Eleanor Columbus, who collaborated with him on both Nosferatu and The Northman in the past. Just like with all of Eggers’ previous films, Focus Features is backing this project again. Taylor-Johnson’s casting marks another busy stint for the actor, as he also starred in Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later earlier this year.
As a follower of cinema, I’m eagerly anticipating the release of “Werwulf” in 2026, a film that has garnered attention due to director Max Eggers’ reputation for historical authenticity and unnerving horror. This film promises to redefine the werewolf subgenre, an area seldom explored with the level of auteur treatment that Eggers is known for. With the returning creative team and Taylor-Johnson’s proven genre credentials, “Werwulf” is poised to become a prestigious horror highlight of the 2026 film calendar.
Werwulf Will Reunite Eggers With His Nosferatu Stars
Should Lily-Rose Depp sign on for the movie “Werwulf,” it would mark her second project with director Eggers. In 2024’s “Nosferatu,” she delivered a critically acclaimed performance as Ellen Hutter, earning praise for her intensity and emotional depth. The film surpassed box office predictions, raking in $174 million globally and garnering four Academy Award nominations. Depp’s acting was widely recognized as one of the film’s highlights, with many commending her ability to bring the most chilling scenes to life.
Taylor-Johnson, who was seen in the film ‘Nosferatu’, is reprising his role for ‘Werwulf’, mirroring Eggers’ increasing trend of utilizing a pool of reliable actors across various productions. This pattern has been noticeable with Willem Dafoe, who featured in ‘The Lighthouse’, ‘The Northman’, and ‘Nosferatu’, and is rumored to be considered for the role of Ebenezer Scrooge in Eggers’ upcoming adaptation of ‘A Christmas Carol’. Similar to ‘Werwulf’, ‘A Christmas Carol’ will be a period horror film, but this time produced by Warner Bros. Apart from ‘Werwolf’ and ‘A Christmas Carol’, Eggers is also set to direct the sequel to Jim Henson’s ‘Labyrinth’ for TriStar Pictures. This movie is being jointly written with Sjón, and while details about the plot are scarce, it’s expected to be a continuation of the 1986 original. Eggers has also mentioned his desire to create a Western in the future, but confirmed that ‘Werwulf’ takes precedence and will be shot before any other projects.
Over the past ten years, Eggers’ cinematic journey has taken a remarkable turn, starting with “The Witch” and continuing through “The Lighthouse“, “The Northman“, and “Nosferatu>”. Each movie ventures into fresh horror terrain, combining folklore and historical accuracy with unsettling psychological and supernatural aspects. Eggers’ stories frequently revolve around characters ensnared by extreme ideologies or cosmic powers, and “Werwulf” appears to follow suit.
Werwulf opens in theaters on December 25, 2026.
