Nvidia Defends DLSS 5 By Noting That Developers Will Have “Full, Detailed Artistic Control”

Following feedback on their DLSS 5 presentation, Nvidia has clarified that game developers will still have complete creative control over how DLSS 5 impacts the look of their games. They shared this information in a comment pinned to the presentation video.

DLSS 5 gives developers several ways to customize the technology, including adjusting its strength, color, and even masking areas where it shouldn’t be used. The company also emphasizes that DLSS 5 isn’t just a simple visual filter. Instead, it analyzes each frame of the game and uses that information to create new, higher-quality images.

Nvidia explains that game developers have complete creative control over how DLSS 5 looks in their games. The new technology isn’t just a simple filter; developers can precisely adjust things like the strength of the effect, colors, and where it’s applied. DLSS 5 works by analyzing the game’s colors and movement, then uses that information to create a visually consistent result that’s based on the original 3D graphics.

Nvidia demonstrated the features of DLSS 5 using several games, including Resident Evil Requiem. However, they faced criticism because the technology altered the protagonist Grace Ashcroft’s face in a way some viewers described as overly smoothed or “yassified.”

Noclip’s Danny O’Dwyer, a prominent critic, pointed out on social media that the impressive new lighting technology has a strange side effect: it often makes characters look overly sexualized and unrealistically perfect. He described it as if the technology has a tendency to view everything through the eyes of a teenage boy.

Game developers are criticizing the technology as well. Concept artist Jeff Talbot expressed strong disapproval, stating that the game’s artistic vision was lost in the pursuit of unnecessary detail. He felt that the versions using DLSS 5 looked worse and lacked character compared to the original, describing it as a poor AI filter and urging developers to avoid similar approaches.

Nvidia explains that DLSS 5 works by analyzing the colors and movement in each frame of a game. It then uses artificial intelligence to create more realistic lighting and textures, ensuring everything looks consistent throughout the gameplay and stays true to the original game’s design.

According to the company, DLSS 5 lets game developers create graphics so realistic they rival those seen in Hollywood movies, closing the gap between what’s rendered on a computer and what looks real.

Following the presentation of Starfield, Bethesda explained that they’re still refining the game’s lighting to achieve the best visual results. They emphasized that these adjustments will be made by artists and that players will have the option to customize or disable them.
